- Sterk of zwak?

Sound-group words: say the word, name the rule
Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories and verbs I have learned."
How you coach: talking the sound groups of a word through
Today the teacher said a word and your child named the categories and the rules. Then your child did the dictation without the categoriekaart (category card) and with the staalboek (Staal book) closed. The dictation sentence was also about strong and weak verbs.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Listen to the word and say it back.AskWhich word did you hear? Say it again.
- Think of the category and the rule in your head. There is no category card and the Staal book is closed.AskWhich category is this? What is the rule?
- Say the klankgroepen (sound groups, the parts of the word) one by one: ‘De klankgroep is …. De laatste klank is …. Dat is een lange klank. Ik neem een stukje van de … weg.’ (The sound group is …. The last sound is …. That is a long sound. I take away a bit of the ….) With a short sound: ‘Ik schrijf de … dubbel.’ (I write the … double.) With a consonant: ‘Ik schrijf wat ik hoor.’ (I write what I hear.)AskWhat is the sound group? What is the last sound?
- Write the word down, without a category number. A samenstelling (compound word) gets a star in front of it.AskIs it a compound word?
- A verb in the past tense? If the sound changes, it is a sterk (strong) verb. If the sound stays the same, it is zwak (weak).AskDoes the sound of the verb change?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- Read each word aloud once; your child says it back, talks the sound groups through and writes it down, without the Staal book: de gorilla · de ambulance · de pony.Ask: which sound groups do you hear? Which category?1: de gorilla: goo (long sound) · ri (short sound, so double l) · laa (long sound) · de ambulance: am (consonant) · buu (long sound) · lan (consonant) · Centwoord. Ik schrijf c. (Cent word: the c sounds like s.) · de pony: poo (long sound) · Griekse y-woord. Ik schrijf Griekse y. (Greek y word. I write a Greek y.)
- Strong or weak? You say the forms: help – hielp – geholpen · poets – poetste – gepoetst · val – viel – gevallen.Ask: does the sound of the verb change?2: sterk (the sound changes) · zwak (the sound stays the same) · sterk
- Read aloud: ‘Onze buurman heeft een grote taart gekocht.’ Your child writes the word class under each word: znw (noun), hww (auxiliary verb), lw (article), bnw (adjective), vdw (past participle).Ask: which word is the past participle?3: Onze (no label) buurman (znw) heeft (hww) een (lw) grote (bnw) taart (znw) gekocht (vdw)
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- Without the category card, your child says the rule in their head first, then writes. Do not name the category.
