How long does it take? Reading the clock and jumping

Year group 6Maths ยท Block 3, week 3 ยท lesson 110 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can work out the time between two clock times."

How you coach: the school's plan 'How long does it take?'

Today your child learned to work out how long something takes by jumping along a time line: first to the next whole hour, then on to the end time. From 8:45 to 10:20 is 15 + 60 + 20 = 95 minutes, that is 1 hour and 35 minutes.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Find the begintijd (start time) and the eindtijd (end time).
AskWhat time does it start, and what time does it finish?
  2. Jump to the volgende hele uur (the next whole hour). (Do you start on a whole hour? Skip this step.)
AskHow far is it from the start time to the next whole hour? How many minutes is that?
  3. Jump on: first the hele uren (whole hours), then the minuten (minutes).
AskHow many whole hours still fit? And how many minutes are then left until the end time?
  4. Add up the jumps. 60 minuten = 1 uur (60 minutes = 1 hour).
AskHow many minutes is that altogether? How much is that in hours and minutes?
  5. Estimate: round to the kwartier (quarter of an hour). Is it about right?
AskRound the start and the end to the quarter of an hour. Does your answer fit?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. A lesson starts at 9:20 and finishes at 9:55. How long is the lesson?Ask: do you go past the next whole hour? If not, you jump straight to the end time in one go.
  2. From 11:25 to 12:50. How long is that?Let your child draw a time line with jumps. Where does the first jump go?
  3. From 7:50 to 10:05. How long is that?Ask: how many whole hours fit in between? Can you do them in one jump?
  4. From daily life: a baker puts the bread in the oven at 5:40 and takes it out at 6:25. How long was it in the oven?A real clock or a clock on paper helps: turn the long hand along and count the jumps.

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • The common mistake: only subtracting the hours. From 8:50 to 10:10 is not 2 hours. Let your child always jump to the next whole hour first.
  • A real clock helps: let your child turn the long hand and count the jumps. At school the children draw a time line with jumps for every sum in their maths exercise book.
  • Say together that 60 minutes is 1 hour, half an hour is 30 minutes and a quarter of an hour is 15 minutes. Those are the building blocks.
Answers for the parent: 1: 9:20 to 9:55: 35 minutes ยท 2: 11:25 to 12:50: 35 + 50 = 85 minutes = 1 hour and 25 minutes ยท 3: 7:50 to 10:05: 10 + 120 + 5 = 135 minutes = 2 hours and 15 minutes ยท 4: 5:40 to 6:25: 20 + 25 = 45 minutes.
