Grote deelsommen splitsen
- Laat uw kind vertellen.
Splitting big division sums
Learning goal: "I can work out division sums like 372 : 6 by splitting."
How you coach: the school's plan 'Dividing by splitting'
Today your child learned to work out a big division sum by splitting it into two division sums they already know. For example 372 : 6 becomes 360 : 6 = 60 and 12 : 6 = 2, together 62. (At school, : is the sign for 'divided by'.)
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Split the big deelsom (division sum) into twee bekende deelsommen (two division sums you know). First look for a ร10 sum that fits.AskWhich ร10 sum from the times table (10 ร, 20 ร, 30 ร ...) fits? Take the biggest one that fits. What is left over?
- Work out both sums separately (apart).AskWhat does the first division sum give? And the second?
- Add the two results together (tel op).AskWhat do you get when you add the two answers? Is that about what you expected?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- 168 : 4 =Ask: which ร10 sum from the 4 times table fits? What is left over?1: 160 : 4 = 40 and 8 : 4 = 2, together 42
- 235 : 5 =Write down the ร10 sums of 5 together: 10 ร, 20 ร, 30 ร ... Which one fits best?2: 200 : 5 = 40 and 35 : 5 = 7, together 47
- 294 : 6 =Ask: does 50 ร 6 fit? And 40 ร 6? Which is the biggest one that fits?3: 240 : 6 = 40 and 54 : 6 = 9, together 49
- From daily life: a garden centre has 238 flower bulbs. They are shared out equally into 7 bags. How many bulbs go in each bag?Ask: which division sum goes with this story? Write it down first.4: 238 : 7. 210 : 7 = 30 and 28 : 7 = 4, together 34 bulbs in each bag.
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- With division, splitting into hundreds, tens and ones (as with adding) often does not work. Each part must fit in the times table: first look for the ร10 sum.
- The biggest ร10 part that fits is the handiest. With lots of small parts you get there too, but it takes longer.
- Do not forget the last step: adding the two answers. At school, too, your child writes down the split for every sum in their maths exercise book.
