  • Laat uw kind vertellen. U luistert en vraagt door.
  • Vraag, maar zeg het antwoord niet voor. Ook niet als u het weet.
  • Prijs de aanpak, niet alleen het antwoord.
  1. Luister naar het werkwoord. In welke tijd staat het: tegenwoordige of verleden tijd?
VraagIn welke tijd staat het? Hoe weet je dat?
  2. Verander de tijd en zeg de werkwoordregel van die tijd. Tegenwoordige tijd: Persoonsvorm in de tegenwoordige tijd: ik-vorm+t, behalve bij ik en als jij of je erachter staat en bij de gebiedende wijs.
VraagWat is de ik-vorm? Verandert de klank?
  3. Sterk of zwak?

  3. Sterk of zwak?

· Colawoord. Ik schrijf c. · de cactus: Colawoord. Changing the tense: strong or weak

Year group 6Spelling · Block 9, week 4 · lesson 410 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories and verbs I still find difficult."

How you coach: strong or weak, and changing the tense

Today your child changed the tense of verbs and did a dictation without the category card. Your child was also asked whether a verb is sterk (strong) or zwak (weak), and how they know.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Listen to the verb. Which tense is it: present or past?
AskWhich tense is it? How do you know?
  2. Change the tense and say the verb rule for that tense. Present tense: Persoonsvorm in de tegenwoordige tijd: ik-vorm+t, behalve bij ik en als jij of je erachter staat en bij de gebiedende wijs. (Finite verb in the present tense: the ‘I’ form + t, except with ik, when jij or je comes after it, and in the imperative.)
AskWhat is the ik-vorm (the ‘I’ form)? Does the sound change?
  3. Strong or weak? If the sound changes (nemen – nam), it is strong. If the sound stays the same (bellen – belde), it is weak.
AskHow do you know whether it is strong or weak?
  4. Write it down and read it back: does the tense fit the person?
AskIs it right? How do you know?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Read each word once; your child repeats it and writes it, without a book: de explosie · het circus · de cactus.Ask: which categories do you recognise? What are the rules?
  2. Change the tense: you say ‘jij las · ik kom · zij schreef’; your child writes the other tense.Ask: which tense is it? What is the ‘I’ form?
  3. Strong or weak? You say ‘wij kwamen · zij werkten · hij at’; your child says whether the verb is strong or weak and how they know.Ask: does the sound of the verb change?
  4. Read aloud: ‘Zwom de kleine hond in de sloot?’ Your child writes the word class under each word and finds pv (finite verb), wwg (all the verbs) and ond (subject).Ask: which word comes first, and what is it then?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • Let your child say the two tenses side by side (bellen – belde, blijven – bleef): then they hear for themselves whether the sound changes.
Answers for the parent: 1: de explosie: Taxiwoord. Ik schrijf x. (I write x) · het circus: Centwoord. Ik schrijf c. (I hear s, I write c) · Colawoord. Ik schrijf c. Ik schrijf c. · 2: jij leest · ik kwam · zij schrijft · 3: kwamen: strong (komen – kwam) · werkten: weak (werken – werkte) · at: strong (eten – at) · 4: Zwom (ww) de (lw) kleine (bnw) hond (znw) in (vz) de (lw) sloot (znw); pv zwom; wwg zwom; ond de kleine hond; tense test: Zwemt de kleine hond in de sloot?
