Theewoord.
Ik schrijf i. / box: Taxiwoord. Ik schrijf x. ยท de *ketchupfles: ketchup: Chefwoord. Ik schrijf c h. / fles: Hakwoord.
Without the category card, also with compound words
Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories I still find difficult."
How you coach: talking a compound word through part by part
Today your child wrote words with the class on the mini whiteboard and did a dictation without the category card. With a samenstelling (compound word) your child puts a star in front of the word and names the category and the rule for each part.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Listen to the word and say it back. Is it made of two or more words? Then it is a compound word.AskWhich words is it made of?
- Say the category and the rule for each part, from left to right. There is no categoriekaart (category card).AskWhich category is in the first word? And in the second?
- Write the word down, without a category number, and put a star in front of the compound word.AskDid you put the star?
- A sentence? Write the word class under each word.AskWhich word class is this word?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- Read each word once; your child repeats it and writes it, without a book: de methode ยท de theorie ยท de discotheek.Ask: which categories do you recognise? What are the rules?1: de methode: Theewoord. Ik schrijf t h. (I hear t, I write th) ยท de theorie: Theewoord. Ik schrijf t h. ยท de discotheek: Colawoord. Ik schrijf c. (I hear k, I write c) ยท Theewoord. Ik schrijf t h.
- Compound words: you say de skibox and de ketchupfles; your child writes them down with a star and names the category for each part.Ask: where is the border between the two words?2: de *skibox: ski: Kilowoord. Ik schrijf i. (I hear ee, I write i) / box: Taxiwoord. Ik schrijf x. (I write x) ยท de *ketchupfles: ketchup: Chefwoord. Ik schrijf c h. (I hear sh, I write ch) / fles: Hakwoord. (I write it as I hear it)
- Read aloud; your child writes the sentence down and writes the word class under each word: Opa schrijft: โVul de rode emmer!โAsk: which form is the second verb in?3: Opa (znw) schrijft (ww) Vul (ww) de (lw) rode (bnw) emmer (znw); Vul is in the imperative
- From daily life: think of two compound words from the kitchen and write them down.Ask: which words is it made of?4: own words
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- Without the category card: first the rule in your head, then write. Each part of a compound word has its own category.
