Sterk of zwak?
- Sterk of zwak?
Revision after the test
Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories and verbs I still find difficult."
How you coach: category and rule for every word
After the test the teacher revised what was not yet automatic. Together with the class, your child wrote two words on the mini whiteboard, did a dictation with the category card and a sentence, and found the word classes in that sentence. Your child was also asked whether a verb is sterk (strong) or zwak (weak).
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Listen to the word and say it back.AskWhich word did you hear? Say it again.
- Say the category and the rule. In class, during the dictation, your child points with a finger to the category on the categoriekaart (category card).AskWhich categories are in it? What is the rule?
- Write the word down. A samenstelling (compound word)? Put a star in front of it.AskIs it a compound word?
- A verb in the past tense? Strong or weak? If the sound changes (nemen – nam), it is strong. If the sound stays the same (bellen – belde), it is weak.AskDoes the sound of the verb change?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- Read each word once; your child repeats it, names the categories and writes it: het mysterie · de puppy · de box.Ask: which category do you hear? What is the rule?1: het mysterie: Griekse y-woord. Ik schrijf Griekse y. (I write y) · de puppy: Griekse y-woord. Ik schrijf Griekse y. · de box: Taxiwoord. Ik schrijf x. (I write x)
- Strong or weak? You say ‘wij aten · zij lachten · hij vloog’; your child says whether the verb is strong or weak.Ask: does the sound change? What is the present tense?2: wij aten: strong (eten – at) · zij lachten: weak (lachen – lachte) · hij vloog: strong (vliegen – vloog)
- Read aloud: ‘Twee kleine kinderen spelen in de zandbak.’ Your child writes the word class under each word: tw (number), bnw (adjective), znw (noun), ww (verb), vz (preposition) or lw (article).Ask: which word says how many children there are?3: Twee (tw) kleine (bnw) kinderen (znw) spelen (ww) in (vz) de (lw) zandbak (znw)
- From daily life: together, choose one category or verb rule your child wants to practise more and think of two words for it.Ask: how do you know it is right?4: own words
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- Do not talk about right or wrong in the test, but ask what your child would like to practise more: the teacher does it the same way.
- Word really not working? Show it once; your child says it back, then writes it alone.
