Without the category card: the rules from memory

Year group 6Spelling · Block 9, week 3 · lesson 210 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories I still find difficult."

How you coach: the dictation without the category card

Today the teacher pointed to categories on the categoriekaart (category card); your child said the rule and wrote two words with the class on the mini whiteboard. Then your child did a dictation without the category card and with the staalboek (Staal book) closed, and found the word classes in a sentence, such as the stoffelijk bijvoeglijk naamwoord (material adjective: what something is made of) zilveren.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Listen to the word and say it back.
AskWhich word did you hear? Say it again.
  2. Think of the category and the rule in your head. There is no category card and the Staal book is closed.
AskWhich category is this? What is the rule?
  3. Write the word down, without a category number. A samenstelling (compound word) gets a star in front of it.
AskIs it a compound word? Which categories are in it?
  4. A sentence? Write the word class under each word. A material adjective says what something is made of: Stoffelijk bijvoeglijk naamwoord, dus met -en. (material adjective, so -en)
AskWhat is it made of? Which word class is this?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Read each word once; your child repeats it and writes it, without a book: de energie · het systeem · de coureur.Ask: which categories do you recognise?
  2. Without the card: your child says the rule for the theewoord, the routewoord and the cadeauwoord.Ask: how do you know it is right?
  3. Read aloud: ‘Papa pakt de glazen vaas uit de kast.’ Your child writes the word class under each word: znw (noun), ww (verb), lw (article), sbnw or vz (preposition).Ask: what is the vase made of?
  4. From daily life: find things in the room made of glas (glass), katoen (cotton) or zijde (silk); write them down with the material adjective.Ask: how do you know it is a material adjective?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • Without the category card: your child first says the rule in their head, then writes. Do not say which category it is.
