VraagWelke categorie zit erin? Wat is de regel?
  3. Schrijf het woord op. Een samenstelling? Zet een sterretje ervoor.
    VraagIs het een samenstelling?

Revision: category and rule

Year group 6Spelling · Block 7, week 2 · lesson 510 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories and verbs I still find difficult."

How you coach: category and rule with every word

Today the teacher revised the categories that are not automatic yet. Your child practised with a ball: whoever catches it says the rule. Then there was a dictation with a sentence.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Listen to the word and say it back.
AskWhich word did you hear? Say it again.
  2. Put your finger on the category and think of the rule. Say the category and the rule using letter sounds.
AskWhich category is in it? What is the rule?
  3. Write the word down. A samenstelling (compound word)? Put a star in front of it.
    AskIs it a compound word?
  4. A verb? First: is it the persoonsvorm (finite verb)? Then the verb rule: Persoonsvorm in de tegenwoordige tijd: ik-vorm+t, behalve bij ik en als jij of je erachter staat. (Finite verb in the present tense: the ‘I’ form + t, except with ik and when jij or je comes after it.)
AskIs it the finite verb? What is the ik-vorm (the ‘I’ form)?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Read each word aloud once; your child says it back and writes it down: de mini’s · oma’s sjaal · het logootje.Ask: which category do you recognise? What is the rule?
  2. Verb rows: you say the verb (zoeken · lenen · bewaren); your child writes ik … · hij … · … jij?Ask: what is the ‘I’ form? Where does a t go?
  3. Read aloud: ‘De clown jongleert met ballen.’ Your child finds the finite verb and the onderwerp (subject).Ask for the subject: who or what + the finite verb?
  4. Ball game: you say a category and throw a soft ball or a rolled-up sock. Your child says the rule and throws it back.Ask: can you think of a word for it too?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • Use the same words and rules as at school: other exercises, also from the internet, can be confusing.
  • A word really not working? Show it once; your child says it back, then writes it alone.
Answers for the parent: 1: de mini’s: kilowoord (twice) and apostrof-s-meervoud · oma’s sjaal: apostrof-s bij bezit · het logootje: Verkleinwoord met -aatje, -ootje of -uutje. Start at the front; then ootje · 2: ik zoek · hij zoekt · zoek jij? / ik leen · hij leent · leen jij? / ik bewaar · hij bewaart · bewaar jij? · 3: persoonsvorm jongleert (tijdproef: De clown jongleerde …); onderwerp de clown (Wie jongleert?) · 4: the rule of that category; own words
