- Laat uw kind vertellen.
The apostrophe-s for ownership
Learning goal: "I can write the apostrophe-s plural with y or i and the apostrophe-s for ownership correctly."
How you coach: more than one, or who does it belong to?
Today your child learned another kind of apostrophe-s: the one for bezit (ownership). It shows who something belongs to, as in ‘mama’s fiets’ (mum’s bike). The rule: Apostrof-s bij bezit. Bij bezit en lange klank, y of i aan het eind: apostrof-s. (Apostrophe-s for ownership. For ownership, with a long vowel, a y or an i at the end: apostrophe + s.) Your child did the dictation without the categoriekaart (category card).
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Read the word or the sentence aloud. Keep asking: is it about more than one, or about who something belongs to?AskMore than one, or who does it belong to?
- Is it about ownership? Say the rule above.AskWhich category is this? What is the rule?
- Talk the word through from left to right, using letter sounds. Stop before the ’s and say the rule; then carry on writing.AskWhat do you say just before you write the ’s?
- Without the category card and with the staalboek (Staal book) closed: think of the category and the rule in your head, write the word down and put a star in front of a samenstelling (compound word).AskIs it a compound word?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- Read each word aloud once, without the book: oma’s taart · opa’s sjaal · mama’s tuin.Ask: who does it belong to? What is the rule?1: all three: apostrof-s bij bezit
- Read two sentences aloud; for each one your child says: more than one, or ownership? ‘De foto’s liggen op tafel.’ · ‘Opa’s foto ligt op tafel.’Ask: is it about more than one, or about who something belongs to?2: de foto’s: more than one (apostrof-s-meervoud) · opa’s foto: ownership, who does it belong to? (apostrof-s bij bezit)
- Read aloud: ‘De kat rent door de tuin, maar de vogel blijft op de tak.’ Your child writes the word class under each word: lw (article), znw (noun), ww (verb), vz (preposition) or vw (conjunction).Ask: which word joins the two parts of the sentence?3: De (lw) kat (znw) rent (ww) door (vz) de (lw) tuin (znw), maar (vw) de (lw) vogel (znw) blijft (ww) op (vz) de (lw) tak (znw)
- From daily life: your child writes three short sentences about things that belong to people at home (‘Mama’s …’) and says the rule.Ask: whose is it? How do you know it is right?4: own sentences
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- Common mistake: leaving out the apostrophe for ownership. Then ask: is it about more than one, or about who something belongs to?
- Without the category card: let your child first say the rule in their head, and only then write. Do not say which category it is.
