The garage word without the category card
Learning goal: "I can write the garage word correctly."
How you coach: the dictation without the category card
Today your child practised the garagewoord (garage word: Garagewoord. Ik hoor /zj/, maar ik schrijf g. (Garage word. I hear /zj/, but I write g.)) again with new words. Your child did the dictation without the category card and with the Staal book closed: the rules have to be in their head. Your child also recalled words from the gids-rijtje (gids list) by heart.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Listen to the word and say it back.AskWhich word did you hear? Say it again.
- Think of the category and the rule in your head. There is no categoriekaart (category card) and the staalboek (Staal book) is closed.AskWhich category is this? What is the rule?
- More than one category in the word? Say them all, in order from left to right.AskWhich categories are in it?
- Write the word down, without a category number. A samenstelling (compound word) gets a star in front of it.AskIs it a compound word?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- Read each word aloud once; your child says it back and writes it down, without the book: de stellage ยท de slijtage ยท de sabotage.Ask: which category is this? What is the rule?1: de stellage, de slijtage and de sabotage: Garagewoord. Ik hoor /zj/, maar ik schrijf g.
- Gids list by heart: your child names three words from the gids list and says the rule.Ask: what is the rule? How do you know it is right?2: for example gids, fonds, loods or steeds; the rule: Woord van het gids-rijtje. Ik schrijf d.
- Read aloud: โDe oude buurvrouw haalt een groot brood bij de bakker.โ Your child writes the word class under each word: lw (article), bnw (adjective), znw (noun), ww (verb) or vz (preposition).Ask: which word says something about the bread?3: De (lw) oude (bnw) buurvrouw (znw) haalt (ww) een (lw) groot (bnw) brood (znw) bij (vz) de (lw) bakker (znw)
- From daily life: your child makes up a Dutch sentence with a garage word and writes it down, with a capital letter and a full stop.Ask: which rule goes with the garage word?4: own sentence
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- Without the category card: let your child first say the rule in their head, and only then write. Do not say which category it is.
- Your child practises the gids list by heart: you do not need to know the words. If your child forgets one, let them try another.
