  4. Schrijf het woord op, zonder categorienummer. Een samenstelling krijgt een sterretje ervoor.
    VraagIs het een samenstelling?

Samen oefenen aan tafel

Finishing the route word

Year group 6Spelling · Block 6, week 1 · lesson 410 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can write the route word correctly."

How you coach: category and rule without the category card

Your child finished the routewoord (route word: Routewoord. Ik schrijf otje-ou. (Route word. I write ou, with an o.)), without the category card. Your child also revised earlier categories (taxiwoord, chefwoord, theewoord, caféwoord, cadeauwoord) and put verbs into the past tense.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Listen to the word and say it back.
AskWhich word did you hear? Say it again.
  2. Think of the category and the rule in your head. Stop before the ou and say the rule; then carry on writing.
AskWhich category is this? What do you say before you write the ou?
  3. A verb in the past tense? Say the verb rule: Persoonsvorm in de verleden tijd van een sterk werkwoord. Ik denk aan de categoriekaart. (Finite verb in the past tense of a strong verb. I think of the category card.)
AskWhat is the ik-vorm (the ‘I’ form) in the present tense? And in the past tense?
  4. Write the word down, without a category number. A samenstelling (compound word) gets a star in front of it.
    AskIs it a compound word?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Read each word aloud once; your child says it back and writes it down, without the book: de clou · de couscous · de fietsroute.Ask: which category do you recognise? Is it a compound word?
  2. Verbs: you say the verb (vinden · schrijven · nemen); your child writes ik … (present tense) and ik … (past tense).Ask: what is the verb rule?
  3. Read aloud: ‘Mijn tante las een boek in de tuin.’ Your child finds the persoonsvorm (finite verb) and the onderwerp (subject).Say the sentence in the present tense: which word changes?
  4. From daily life: in a leaflet your child finds a word with x, a word with c h and a word with t h, and says the rule for each.Ask: which rule goes with it? How do you know it is right?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • Check the work carefully together: careful checking is worth just as much as a good dictation.
  • A word not right? Let your child write it again a few times.
