Herhaling: klankgroepenwoorden

Revision: sound-group words

Year group 6Spelling · Block 5, week 4 · lesson 210 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories I still find difficult."

How you coach: putting sound-group words into words

Today your child revised klankgroepenwoorden (sound-group words) and other categories. Your child did the dictation without the category card. Your child also found the tense, the finite verb, the werkwoordelijk gezegde (all the verbs) and the subject in a sentence.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Listen to the word and say it back. Think of the category and the rule in your head.
AskWhich category is this? What is the rule?
  2. Put the word into words from left to right, using letter sounds: the sound group, the last sound and what that means. Long sound: take away a bit of the sound. Short sound: double the consonant. Consonant or two-letter sound: write what you hear.
AskWhat is the sound group? What is the last sound? What do you write then?
  3. Also say the other categories in the word and their rules.
AskWhich other categories are in it?
  4. Write the word down, without a category number. A samenstelling (compound word) gets a star.
    AskIs it a compound word?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Read each word aloud once; your child says it back and writes it down, without the book: fossiel · actueel · individueel · ballonnen.Ask: what is the last sound of each sound group? What do you write then?
  2. Ball game: you name a category and throw the ball. Your child catches it and names a word and the rule. After three words, a new category.Ask: how do you check the word?
  3. Read aloud: ‘De bij zoemde rond de bloemen.’ Which tense is the sentence in? Your child finds the finite verb and the subject.Say the sentence in another tense: which word changes?
  4. From daily life: find three things at home whose Dutch name is a compound word and write them down with a star.Ask: which two parts is the word made of?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • You do not need to know all the sound-group rules: keep asking ‘what is the last sound?’ and let your child explain.
  • Say sounds, not letter names: ‘caa’ as at school, not ‘cee-aa’.
