VraagWelke categorie zit erin? Wat is de regel?
  3. Schrijf het woord op. Een samenstelling krijgt een sterretje ervoor.
VraagIs het een samenstelling? Uit welke woorden bestaat het?

Revision: what is still wobbly

Year group 6Spelling · Block 3, week 2 · lesson 510 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories I still find difficult."

How you coach: category and rule with every word

The last lesson of the week was revision: the teacher practises the categories that do not come automatically yet, such as the langermaakwoord (make-longer word) with -heid and -teit, the klankgroepenwoord (sound group word) with ueel, eaal, uele or eale, and the taxiwoord (taxi word). Your child did a dictation and says the category and the rule with every word.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Listen to the word and say it back.
AskWhich word did you hear? Say it again.
  2. Say the category (or categories) in the word and the rule that goes with it, using letter sounds (the sound, not the name of the letter).
AskWhich category is in it? What is the rule?
  3. Write the word down. A samenstelling (compound word) gets a star in front of it.
AskIs it a compound word? Which words is it made of?
  4. A verb? First: is it a persoonsvorm (finite verb)? Then the verb rule: Persoonsvorm in de tegenwoordige tijd: ik-vorm+t, behalve bij ik en als jij of je erachter staat. (Finite verb in the present tense: the ‘I’ form + t, except with ik and when jij or je comes after it.)
AskIs it a finite verb? What is the ik-vorm (the ‘I’ form)?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Read each word aloud once; your child says it back, writes it down and says the category and the rule: de werkloosheid · eventuele.Ask: which categories are in it? Is it a compound word?
  2. Read aloud in the same way: de skibox · de expositie.Ask: which category goes with the x?
  3. Verb rows: you say the verb (wassen · plukken · rusten), your child writes ik … · hij … · … jij?Ask: what is the ik-vorm? Where does a t go?
  4. Choose a category that is still difficult, say the rule and think of three words for it.Ask: how do you check the word?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • Revision is not a test: practise mostly the categories your child says do not come automatically yet.
  • A word really not working? Show it once, let your child say it back, then write it alone.
