  1. Sterk of zwak?

· commercieel: Colawoord. Ik schrijf c. Centwoord. Ik schrijf c. Kilowoord. Ik schrijf i. Eel-woord. Ik schrijf ee. · punctueel: Colawoord. Ik schrijf c. Klankgroep tuu: lange klank, een stukje van de uu weg. Eel-woord. Ik schrijf ee. · 3: eigen woorden.

Revision: categories and strong or weak verbs

Year group 6Spelling · Block 2, week 4 · lesson 110 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories and verbs I still find difficult."

How you coach: categories and strong or weak verbs

Week 4 is the revision week of block 2. Your child looked back at which categories are still difficult (‘Terugkijken spelling’ at the back of the workbook). Today your child revised categories and said whether a verb is sterk (strong: the sound changes) or zwak (weak: the sound stays the same).

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Choose the category that is still difficult and say the rule.
AskWhich category do you still find difficult? What is the rule?
  2. Put your finger on the category. Think of the rule. Write the word down and write the number of the category above it. A samenstelling (compound word)? Put a star in front of it.
AskWhich category is this? What is the rule?
  3. Verb: is it strong (the sound changes in the past tense) or weak (the sound stays the same)? Say the present and the past tense.
AskDoes the sound change in the past tense? Then it is strong.

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Strong or weak? You say the words; your child says strong or weak and gives the present and the past tense: hij liep · ik fietste · wij zongen · zij kookte.Ask: does the sound of the verb change?
  2. Read each word aloud once; your child says it back and writes it down, with the number of the category above it: de boxer · commercieel · punctueel.Ask: which category is this? What is the rule?
  3. Ask your child which categories they chose in ‘Terugkijken spelling’. Choose one and think of three words for it.Ask: what is the rule of this category?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • A strong verb changes its sound in the past tense (liep, zongen). A weak verb stays the same (fietste, kookte).
  • Talk in category names and rules, not in numbers, as the teacher does.
Answers for the parent: 1: hij liep: strong (loopt – liep) · ik fietste: weak (fiets – fietste) · wij zongen: strong (zingen – zongen) · zij kookte: weak (kookt – kookte) · 2: boxer: Taxiwoord. Ik schrijf x. · commercieel: Colawoord. Ik schrijf c. Centwoord. Ik schrijf c. Kilowoord. Ik schrijf i. Eel-woord. Ik schrijf ee. · punctueel: Colawoord. Ik schrijf c. Klankgroep tuu: lange klank, een stukje van de uu weg. Eel-woord. Ik schrijf ee. · 3: own words.
