The imperative and dictation without the card
Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories and verbs I have learned."
How you coach: category and rule without the category card
Almost at the end of the year your child showed how strong their rules are: the dictation without the categoriekaart (category card) and verbs in the gebiedende wijs (imperative), a command such as ‘Lig!’ (Lie down!). No t is added.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Listen to the word and say it back.AskWhich word did you hear? Say it again.
- Think of the category and the rule in your head. Write the word down and put a star in front of a samenstelling (compound word).AskWhich category is this? What is the rule?
- A verb? First: is it a persoonsvorm (finite verb)? Then the verb rule: Persoonsvorm in de tegenwoordige tijd: ik-vorm+t, behalve bij ik en als jij of je erachter staat en bij de gebiedende wijs. (Present-tense finite verb: ‘I’ form + t, except with ik, with jij/je after it, and in the imperative.)AskIs it a command? Is a t added?
- For grammar: underline the word classes and write the abbreviation underneath. Words without a label are left as they are.AskWhich word class is this word?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- Read each word aloud once; your child says it back and writes it down, without the staalboek (Staal book): de tournee · het mozaïek · de theorie.Ask: which category do you recognise? What is the rule?1: de tournee: Routewoord. Ik schrijf otje-ou. (Route word: I write ou, with an o.) · het mozaïek: Tremawoord. Puntjes op de i. (Trema word. Two dots on the i.) · de theorie: Theewoord. Ik schrijf t h. (Tea word. I write t h.) (besides the sound groups)
- Imperative: you say the present tense (jij pakt · wij lopen · jullie springen · jij zingt); your child writes the command with an exclamation mark.Ask: which verb rule goes with it?2: Pak! · Loop! · Spring! · Zing! (verb rule from step 3: in the imperative no t is added)
- Read aloud: ‘Mijn oma koopt een glazen vaas.’ Your child writes the word class under each word: znw (noun), ww (verb), lw (article), sbnw (material adjective).Ask: what is the vase made of?3: Mijn (no label) oma (znw) koopt (ww) een (lw) glazen (sbnw) vaas (znw)
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- You write a command with the ‘I’ form, without a t after it: ‘Lig!’, not ‘Ligt!’. Let your child say the verb rule first.
