Categories and the past tense

Year group 6Spelling · Block 10, week 1 · lesson 410 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories and verbs I have learned."

How you coach: category and rule without the category card

Today your child showed that they can use the rules without the categoriekaart (category card) too. Your child also put verbs into the past tense; with these verbs the sound of the verb changes (sterke werkwoorden, strong verbs).

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Listen to the word and say it back.
AskWhich word did you hear? Say it again.
  2. Think of the category and the rule in your head. Write the word down and put a star in front of a samenstelling (compound word).
AskWhich category is this? What is the rule?
  3. A verb in the past tense? Say the verb rule: Persoonsvorm in de verleden tijd van een sterk werkwoord. Ik denk aan de categoriekaart. (Finite verb in the past tense of a strong verb. I think of the category card.)
AskWhat is the verb in the present tense? And in the past tense?
  4. For grammar: underline the word classes and write the abbreviation underneath.
AskWhich word class is this word?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Read each word aloud once; your child says it back and writes it down, without the staalboek (Staal book): het examen · de gym · de massage.Ask: which category do you recognise? What is the rule?
  2. Verbs: you say the present tense (ik loop · wij zitten · jij schrijft · jullie blijven); your child writes the past tense.Ask: which verb rule goes with the past tense?
  3. Read aloud: ‘Mijn vader koopt drie nieuwe stoelen.’ Your child writes the word class under each word: znw (noun), ww (verb), tw (number word), bnw (adjective).Ask: which word tells you how many?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • Is the past tense not working? Say the present and the past tense several times one after the other: that way your child hears the sound change.
  • More practice? Use the practice sheet (button on the digital card).
