  • Laat uw kind vertellen. U luistert en vraagt door.
  • Vraag, maar zeg het antwoord niet voor. Ook niet als u het weet.
  • Prijs de aanpak, niet alleen het antwoord.
  1. Zeg het woord na. Zeg: De klankgroep is … De laatste klank is …
VraagWat is de klankgroep? Wat is de laatste klank?

Revision: the categories that are still difficult

Year group 6Spelling · Block 1, week 1 · lesson 510 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories I still find difficult."

How you coach: talking through sound-group words

Today your child practised the categories that do not come automatically yet, especially the klankgroepenwoord (sound-group word). Your child says the sound group, the last sound and what that means for the spelling. Your child also says which category they would like to practise more.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Say the word back. Say: De klankgroep is … De laatste klank is … (The sound group is … The last sound is …)
AskWhat is the sound group? What is the last sound?
  2. Is it a short sound, a long sound, a consonant or a two-letter sound?
AskWhat kind of sound is this?
  3. What do I write? Short sound: write the consonant twice. Long sound: take away part of the sound. Consonant or two-letter sound: write what you hear.
    AskWhat do you write then?
  4. Are there other categories in the word, such as a verkleinwoord (diminutive)? Say those too, from left to right.
AskIs there another category in it? What is the rule?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Read each word aloud once; your child says the sound group and the last sound and writes the word down: de lepel · de ladder · de zomer.Ask: is the last sound of the sound group short or long? What do you write then?
  2. You name a category from this week’s lessons (hakwoord, zingwoord, plankwoord, verkleinwoord); your child names a word for it and says the rule.Ask: how do you check the word?
  3. Read the sentence aloud once; your child says it back, thinks of the categories and writes it down in one go: Wij rijden langs het kanaal naar de stad.Ask: which words have a sound group with a long or a short sound? Where are the capital letter and the punctuation mark?
  4. Together choose one category your child would like to practise more and think of three words for it.Ask: what is the rule for this category?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • Praise what is already going well and ask: which category would you like to practise more? Your child tells the teacher too.
  • Say sounds, not letter names: ‘faa’, not ‘ef-aa’.
Answers for the parent: 1: lepel: klankgroep lee, lange klank: een stukje van de ee weg · ladder: klankgroep la, korte klank: de d dubbel · zomer: klankgroep zoo, lange klank: een stukje van de oo weg · 2: own words, with category and rule · 3: Wij rijden langs het kanaal naar de stad. (capital letter for Wij, full stop at the end) · 4: own words.
