VraagWelke keersom hoort erbij?
The area of a rectangle (m²)
Learning goal: "I can work out the area of a rectangle with length × width."
How you coach: the school's plan 'De oppervlakte van een rechthoek'
Today your child worked out the area (oppervlakte) without squares, also in stories, and chose between cm² and m². A vegetable garden of 6 m by 4 m is 6 × 4 = 24 m²: each piece of 1 m by 1 m is 1 square metre (vierkante meter). Small things (fit on a table) in cm², big things (you can walk on them) in m².
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Find the length (the long side) and the width (the short side).AskWhich side is the length and which is the width? Which numbers go with them?
- Look which unit is given: cm or m.AskDoes it say cm or m next to the numbers?
- Work it out: length × width = area.AskWhich times sum goes with it? What is the answer?
- Put the right unit after it: cm² or m² (square centimetre or square metre).AskWhich unit do you put after it? Does it fit the size of the thing?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- A garden is 9 m long and 6 m wide. How big is the area?Ask: is it about the edge or about the surface? Which unit do you put after it?1: 9 × 6 = 54 m²
- A hall is 14 m long and 5 m wide. How big is the area?Ask: can you split the 14 to make the times sum easier?2: 14 × 5 = 70 m² (10 × 5 + 4 × 5)
- A card is 12 cm long and 8 cm wide. How big is the area? Also write the unit.Ask: does the card fit on the table, or can you walk on it? So which unit fits?3: 12 × 8 = 96 cm² (small, fits on a table)
- From daily life: you want to buy artificial grass for a piece of garden of 7 m by 5 m. How many m² of artificial grass do you need?Ask: what is your sum? What do you put after it?4: 7 × 5 = 35 m².
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- The typical mistake: working out the perimeter (omtrek, adding all the sides) when the area is asked. Keep asking: 'Is it about the edge (rand) or about the surface (vlak)?' The area is the surface: length × width.
- Let your child first make a quick sketch with the measurements on it: then your child sees which two numbers to multiply.
- For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times · what do I know, what is the question? · write down the sum · work it out · check + unit. Here 'what do I know?' is the length and the width, and 'check + unit' needs m² or cm².
