Zo coacht u: het stappenplan 'Cijferend vermenigvuldigen' van school

Uw kind leerde vandaag een keersom als 4 × 326 cijferend uitrekenen: onder elkaar, van rechts naar links. 4 × 6 = 24: schrijf 4 en zet 2 klein boven de volgende kolom (het onthoudcijfer). Eerst keer, dan het onthoudcijfer erbij: 4 × 2 = 8, plus 2 = 10.

  • Laat uw kind vertellen. U luistert en vraagt door.
  • Vraag, maar zeg het antwoord niet voor. Ook niet als u het weet.
  • Prijs de aanpak, niet alleen het antwoord.
  1. Zet de getallen onder elkaar in de ruitjes: het kleine getal onder de eenheden, × erachter.
    VraagStaan de cijfers recht onder elkaar? Staat het kleine getal onder de eenheden?
  2. Begin rechts: keer de eenheden. Is het 10 of meer? Schrijf het laatste cijfer op; het eerste cijfer zet je klein boven de tientallen.
    VraagWat is de keersom van de eenheden? Wat schrijf je op, en wat onthoud je?
  3. Keer de tientallen en tel het onthoudcijfer erbij. Weer: één cijfer opschrijven, de rest klein boven de honderdtallen.

  4. Keer de honderdtallen, tel het onthoudcijfer erbij en schrijf het hele getal op.
    VraagWat komt er in de laatste kolom? Wat schrijf je op?
  5. Klopt het? Schat: rond het grote getal af op honderdtallen.
    VraagWat krijg je met het afgeronde getal? Zit je antwoord in de buurt?

Samen oefenen aan tafel

  1. 4 × 135 = ...Vraag: waar zet je het onthoudcijfer? Streep je het door als je het gebruikt hebt?
  2. 3 × 247 = ...Vraag: wat doe je eerst, keer of erbij? Welk onthoudcijfer krijg je?
  3. 6 × 153 = ...Vraag: schat eerst. Past je antwoord daarbij?
  4. Uit het dagelijks leven: een bioscoop heeft 5 zalen met elk 168 stoelen. Hoeveel stoelen zijn dat samen?Vraag: wat is je som? Welk getal zet je onder de eenheden?

Tip van de juf

  • Twee fouten om op te letten: de onthoudcijfers vergeten (4 × 326 wordt dan 1284), en het onthoudcijfer eerst bij het getal optellen en dán keer doen (dat geeft 1664). Eerst keer, dan erbij. Streep elk onthoudcijfer door zodra het gebruikt is.
  • Laat uw kind schrijven in ruitjes, één cijfer per hokje, zodat de kolommen recht staan. Een schatting vangt grote fouten, maar niet een vergeten onthoudcijfer.
  • Bij verhaaltjes gebruikt de klas altijd het 5-stappenplan: lees 2 keer · wat weet ik, wat is de vraag? · schrijf de som op · reken uit · controleer + eenheid. Hier is 'reken uit' het cijferend vermenigvuldigen.

How you coach: the school's plan 'Cijferend vermenigvuldigen'

Today your child learned to work out a times sum like 4 × 326 with the column method (cijferend, digit by digit): under each other, from right to left. 4 × 6 = 24: write 4 and put 2 small above the next column (the carry digit, onthoudcijfer). First times, then add the carry digit: 4 × 2 = 8, plus 2 = 10.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Put the numbers under each other in the squares: the small number under the ones (eenheden), × after it.
    AskAre the digits exactly under each other? Is the small number under the ones?
  2. Start on the right: times the ones. Is it 10 or more? Write down the last digit; put the first digit small above the tens (tientallen).
    AskWhat is the times sum of the ones? What do you write down, and what do you carry?
  3. Times the tens and add the onthoudcijfer. Again: write down one digit, the rest small above the hundreds (honderdtallen).
    AskWhat is the times sum? Do you add the carry digit after multiplying?
  4. Times the hundreds, add the onthoudcijfer and write down the whole number.
    AskWhat goes in the last column? What do you write down?
  5. Is it right? Estimate: round the big number to hundreds.
    AskWhat do you get with the rounded number? Is your answer close?

Practise together at the table

  1. 4 × 135 = ...Ask: where do you put the carry digit? Do you cross it out once you have used it?
  2. 3 × 247 = ...Ask: what do you do first, times or adding? Which carry digit do you get?

  4. From daily life: a cinema has 5 screens with 168 seats each. How many seats is that altogether?Ask: what is your sum? Which number do you put under the ones?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • Two mistakes to watch for: forgetting the carry digits (onthoudcijfers; 4 × 326 then becomes 1284), and first adding the carry digit to the number and only then doing times (that gives 1664). First times, then add. Cross out each carry digit as soon as it has been used.
  • Let your child write in squares, one digit per square, so the columns are straight. An estimate catches big mistakes, but not a forgotten carry digit.
  • For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times · what do I know, what is the question? · write down the sum · work it out · check + unit. Here 'work it out' is the column multiplication.
