Uw kind leerde vandaag een keersom als 4 × 399 handig uit het hoofd uitrekenen. 399 ligt vlak bij 400, dus het rekent 4 × 400 = 1600. Dan heeft het 4 × 1 te veel genomen, dus er gaat 4 af: 1596. Een prijs als € 199 of € 399 kunt u zo ook snel uitrekenen.

  • Laat uw kind vertellen. U luistert en vraagt door.
  • Vraag, maar zeg het antwoord niet voor. Ook niet als u het weet.
  • Prijs de aanpak, niet alleen het antwoord.
  1. Zoek een rond getal vlak bij het grote getal. 399 ligt vlak bij 400.

  3. 3 × 699 = ...Vraag: wat is je makkelijke som? Is je antwoord net iets kleiner?
  4. Uit het dagelijks leven: een kaartje voor het pretpark kost € 39. Je koopt 8 kaartjes. Hoeveel betaal je?Vraag: wat is je som? Welk rond bedrag ligt vlak bij € 39?

Hoe ging het?

Tip van de juf

  • Dé fout van vandaag: maar 1 eraf halen in plaats van het kleine getal × 1. Bij 6 × 399 zijn het 6 stukjes te veel, dus 6 eraf, niet 1. Laat uw kind de te veel genomen stukjes hardop tellen.
  • Geld maakt het concreet, net als in de klas: 5 dingen van € 199? Doe alsof u betaalt met 5 briefjes van € 200 (€ 1000) en bij elk ding € 1 terugkrijgt: € 5 terug, dus € 995.
  • Bij verhaaltjes gebruikt de klas altijd het 5-stappenplan: lees 2 keer · wat weet ik, wat is de vraag? · schrijf de som op · reken uit · controleer + eenheid. Hier is 'reken uit' het handig rekenen, en bij 'controleer': net iets kleiner dan de makkelijke som?

How you coach: the school's plan '1× minder bij grotere keersommen'

Today your child learned to work out a times sum like 4 × 399 cleverly in their head. 399 is close to 400, so your child works out 4 × 400 = 1600. Then 4 × 1 has been taken too many, so 4 comes off: 1596. You can also quickly work out a price like € 199 or € 399 this way.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Find a round number close to the big number. 399 is close to 400.
    AskWhich round number is close to the big number?
  2. Work out the easy sum: 4 × 400.
    AskWhat is the easy sum with the round number? What is the answer?
  3. You took 4 × 1 too many. So take 4 off (not 1!).
    AskHow many times did you take 1 too many? So how much comes off?
  4. Is it right? The answer is just a little smaller than the easy sum.

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • The typical mistake: only taking 1 off instead of the small number × 1. With 6 × 399 there are 6 bits too many, so 6 off, not 1. Let your child count out loud the bits taken too many.
  • Money makes it concrete, just like in class: 5 things of € 199? Pretend you pay with 5 notes of € 200 (€ 1000) and get € 1 back for each thing: € 5 back, so € 995.
  • For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times · what do I know, what is the question? · write down the sum · work it out · check + unit. Here 'work it out' is the clever calculating, and at 'check': just a little smaller than the easy sum?
