- Onthoud: 1 l = 1000 ml.VraagHoeveel milliliter is 1 liter?
- l โ ml: doe ร 1000. ml โ l: hoeveel keer 1000 ml past erin?
000 ml = ... lVraag: hoeveel keer past 1000 ml erin?2: 12 l
Converting litres and millilitres
Learning goal: "I can convert litres and millilitres into each other."
How you coach: the school's plan 'Liters en milliliters omrekenen'
Today your child learned that 1 litre is the same as 1000 millilitres, and how to convert litres and millilitres into each other. A carton of milk is 1 litre, and so are two small bottles of 500 ml together. Does a bottle say 1 l 250 ml? Then that is 1000 + 250 = 1250 ml.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Look: from l to ml or from ml to l?AskWhich unit do you have? Which unit do you need?
- Remember: 1 l = 1000 ml.AskHow many millilitres is 1 litre?
- l โ ml: do ร 1000. ml โ l: how many times does 1000 ml fit in it?AskDo you do times 1000, or do you look how many times 1000 ml fits in it? What is the sum?
- Check with a reference measure (referentiemaat): a carton of milk is 1 litre, a small drink carton is 200 ml.AskDoes it fit with a carton of milk? Is your answer bigger or smaller than you expected?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- 9 l = ... mlAsk: from which unit to which unit? How many cartons of milk is that?1: 9000 ml
000 ml = ... lAsk: how many times does 1000 ml fit in it?2: 12 l
- 5 l 50 ml = ... mlAsk: what do you convert first? What do you do with the 50 ml after that?3: 5050 ml (5000 + 50)
- From daily life: you drink four small drink cartons of 200 ml. How many ml is that together? Is that more or less than a carton of milk (1 litre)?Ask: what is your sum? How do you know whether it is more or less than a litre?4: 4 ร 200 = 800 ml, so less than 1 litre.
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- The typical mistake: adding litres and millilitres as if they were the same unit (then 1 l 250 ml becomes 251 or 1250 litres). Let your child always put everything in millilitres first and only then add.
- With ml โ l, let your child always ask: 'how many times does 1000 ml fit in it?' That is the same question as with kg and g. A child who writes down a very big number with ml โ l did not look at the direction (step 1).
- For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times ยท what do I know, what is the question? ยท write down the sum ยท work it out ยท check + unit. Here 'work it out' is the converting, and you do 'check' with the reference measure.
