- Laat uw kind vertellen.
Waarom?1: C · B · A
Decimal numbers in order: who wins?
Learning goal: "I can put decimal numbers in a story in order."
How you coach: the school's plan 'Kommagetallen op volgorde zetten'
Today your child practised ordering decimal numbers (a Dutch comma is an English decimal point) in stories where the smallest number sometimes wins: in a race, 10,85 seconds beats 10,9 seconds. And: telling 8,07 and 8,7 apart.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Read the story: should the smallest or the biggest number come first?AskWhat does the story ask? Does the smallest or the biggest number win here?
- Put the numbers in the place-value chart (positieschema): the commas exactly under each other.AskCan you write the numbers under each other, commas exactly under each other?
- Make them the same length: fill up after the comma with zeros.AskHow many digits after the comma does the longest number have? Can you make the others as long?
- Compare from left to right: first the whole numbers, then the tenths (tienden), hundredths (honderdsten), thousandths (duizendsten).AskWhat do you see if you first look at the whole numbers? And then at the tenths?
- Put them in order and check: does it fit the story?AskWhich order do you have? Does it fit the story?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- In a race, A, B and C run the 60 metres in 9,5 s, 9,45 s and 9,05 s. Put the letters from fast to slow.Ask: with times, does the smallest or the biggest number win? Why?1: C · B · A
- Three crates weigh 20,7 kg, 20,07 kg and 20,65 kg. Put them from heavy to light.Ask: what is the first difference you see? Watch where the 0 is.2: 20,7 kg · 20,65 kg · 20,07 kg
- The same coat costs € 39,50 in shop 1, € 35,95 in shop 2 and € 39,05 in shop 3. Order the shops from cheap to expensive.Ask: does the smallest or the biggest amount come first? What do you see at the whole euros?3: € 35,95 · € 39,05 · € 39,50
- From daily life: you measure three ribbons of 0,9 m, 0,85 m and 0,875 m. Which ribbon is the longest?Ask: can you make them the same length? What do you see then?4: the ribbon of 0,9 m.
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- The typical mistakes: putting the biggest time first, and skipping the 0 just after the comma. Ask: 'Who was fastest? How can you tell?'
- A handy trick: pretend it is money. € 8,07 is less than € 8,70.
- For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times · what do I know, what is the question? · write down the sum · work it out · check + unit. Here 'work it out' is comparing in the chart; 'check': does the order fit the story?
