Zo coacht u: het stappenplan 'Kommagetallen op volgorde zetten' van school

Uw kind leerde vandaag kommagetallen op volgorde zetten, bijvoorbeeld de lengte van twee linten: 3,5 m en 3,25 m. Het maakt ze eerst even lang met een 0 (3,50 en 3,25) en vergelijkt dan van links naar rechts, dus 3,5 m is langer. Een getal met meer cijfers achter de komma is niet automatisch groter.

  • Laat uw kind vertellen. U luistert en vraagt door.
  • Vraag, maar zeg het antwoord niet voor. Ook niet als u het weet.
  • Prijs de aanpak, niet alleen het antwoord.
  1. Lees het verhaal: moet het kleinste of het grootste getal vooraan?
    VraagWat wil het verhaal weten? Wint hier het kleinste of het grootste getal?
  2. Zet de getallen in het positieschema: de komma's recht onder elkaar.
    VraagKun je de getallen onder elkaar schrijven, met de komma's recht onder elkaar?
  3. Maak ze even lang: vul achter de komma aan met nullen.
    VraagHoeveel cijfers staan er achter de komma bij het langste getal? Kun je de andere even lang maken?
  4. Vergelijk van links naar rechts: eerst de hele getallen, dan de tienden, dan de honderdsten, dan de duizendsten.
    VraagWat zie je als je eerst naar de hele getallen kijkt? En dan naar de tienden?
  5. Zet ze op volgorde en controleer: past het bij het verhaal?

Samen oefenen aan tafel

  1. Welke is groter: 9,6 of 9,58?Vraag: kun je ze even lang maken? Wat zie je dan bij de tienden?
  2. Zet van klein naar groot: 7,2 · 7,02 · 7,25Vraag: schrijf ze onder elkaar. Wat is het eerste verschil dat je van links naar rechts ziet?
  3. Drie plankjes zijn 0,6 m, 0,575 m en 0,65 m lang. Zet ze van kort naar lang.Vraag: moet het kleinste of het grootste getal vooraan? Hoeveel cijfers achter de komma heeft het langste getal?
  4. Uit het dagelijks leven: bij hoogspringen springt A 1,35 m, B 1,4 m en C 1,325 m. Zet de letters van hoog naar laag.Vraag: wint hier het grootste of het kleinste getal? Wat is je schema?

Tip van de juf

  • Dé fout van vandaag: denken dat een getal met meer cijfers achter de komma groter is. Wie zegt '25 is meer dan 5', leest het stuk achter de komma als een heel getal. Laat uw kind ze even lang maken en denk aan geld: € 3,50 is meer dan € 3,25.
  • Laat uw kind de getallen echt onder elkaar opschrijven, met de komma's recht onder elkaar. Wie het in zijn hoofd doet, maakt sneller een fout.
  • Bij verhaaltjes gebruikt de klas altijd het 5-stappenplan: lees 2 keer · wat weet ik, wat is de vraag? · schrijf de som op · reken uit · controleer + eenheid. Hier is 'reken uit' het vergelijken in het schema; bij 'controleer' past de volgorde bij het verhaal?

Putting decimal numbers (kommagetallen) in order

How you coach: the school's plan 'Kommagetallen op volgorde zetten'

Today your child learned to put decimal numbers in order (a Dutch comma is an English decimal point), for example the length of two ribbons: 3,5 m and 3,25 m. First your child makes them the same length with a 0 (3,50 and 3,25) and then compares from left to right, so 3,5 m is longer. A number with more digits after the comma is not automatically bigger.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Read the story: should the smallest or the biggest number come first?
    AskWhat does the story ask? Does the smallest or the biggest number win here?
  2. Put the numbers in the place-value chart (positieschema): the commas exactly under each other.
    AskCan you write the numbers under each other, commas exactly under each other?
  3. Make them the same length: fill up after the comma with zeros.
    AskHow many digits after the comma does the longest number have? Can you make the others as long?
  4. Compare from left to right: first the whole numbers, then the tenths (tienden), hundredths (honderdsten), thousandths (duizendsten).
    AskWhat do you see if you first look at the whole numbers? And then at the tenths?
  5. Put them in order and check: does it fit the story?
    AskWhich order do you have? Does it fit the story?

Practise together at the table

  1. Which is bigger: 9,6 or 9,58?Ask: can you make them the same length? What do you see then at the tenths?
  2. Put them from small to big: 7,2 · 7,02 · 7,25Ask: write them under each other. What is the first difference you see from left to right?
  3. Three planks are 0,6 m, 0,575 m and 0,65 m long. Put them from short to long.Ask: should the smallest or the biggest number come first? How many digits after the comma does the longest number have?

Tip from the teacher

  • The typical mistake: thinking that a number with more digits after the comma is bigger. A child who says '25 is more than 5' reads the part after the comma as a whole number. Let your child make them the same length, and think of money: € 3,50 is more than € 3,25.
  • Let your child really write the numbers under each other, with the commas exactly under each other. Doing it in your head leads to mistakes more quickly.
  • For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times · what do I know, what is the question? · write down the sum · work it out · check + unit. Here 'work it out' is comparing in the chart; 'check': does the order fit the story?
