Oppervlakte of omtrek? Rand of vlak?

Uw kind leerde vandaag kiezen of een vraag over de rand (omtrek) of over het vlak (oppervlakte) gaat. Bij een ren van 6 m bij 4 m is gaas eromheen de omtrek (20 m) en zijn tegels op de vloer de oppervlakte (24 m²).

  • Laat uw kind vertellen. U luistert en vraagt door.
  • Vraag, maar zeg het antwoord niet voor. Ook niet als u het weet.
  • Prijs de aanpak, niet alleen het antwoord.
  1. Lees de vraag: gaat het om de rand eromheen of om het vlak binnenin?
    VraagGaat de vraag over de rand eromheen of over het vlak binnenin?
  2. Rand eromheen (hek, lijst, lint, lampjes)? Dan reken je de omtrek: tel alle zijden op.
    VraagIs het de rand? Welke zijden tel je dan op?
  3. Vlak binnenin (tegels, gras, vloerkleed, verf)? Dan reken je de oppervlakte: tel de hokjes, rijtjes × hokjes per rijtje.
    VraagIs het het vlak? Hoeveel rijtjes zijn er, en hoeveel hokjes per rijtje?
  4. Controleer de maat: omtrek in m (of cm), oppervlakte in m² (vierkante meter).

Samen oefenen aan tafel

  1. Een schoolplein is 9 m lang en 6 m breed. Er komt een hek omheen. Hoeveel meter hek is nodig?Vraag: rand of vlak? Hoeveel zijden zijn het?
  2. Een kamer is 5 m lang en 4 m breed. Op de vloer komen tegels van 1 m bij 1 m. Hoeveel tegels?Vraag: hoeveel rijtjes zijn het, en hoeveel tegels in een rijtje?
  3. Rand of vlak: behang op een muur · een strook tape rond een tafelblad · een slinger rond een podiumVraag: ligt het erop, of loopt het eromheen?
  4. Uit het dagelijks leven: een tuin is 7 m bij 7 m. Er komt een hekje omheen en er wordt gras in gezaaid. Hoeveel meter hekje? Hoeveel m² gras?Vraag: welke vraag gaat over de rand, en welke over het vlak?

Hoe ging het?

Tip van de juf

  • Twee fouten: bij de omtrek maar twee zijden optellen (6 + 4 = 10 in plaats van 20) en m en m² door elkaar halen. Een gebaar helpt: een rondje met de vinger is de rand, een platte hand is het vlak.
  • Bij verhaaltjes gebruikt de klas altijd het 5-stappenplan: lees 2 keer · wat weet ik, wat is de vraag? · schrijf de som op · reken uit · controleer + eenheid. Hier is 'reken uit' de omtrek of de oppervlakte.
Antwoorden voor de ouder: 1: omtrek, 30 m · 2: oppervlakte, 20 m² (20 tegels) · 3: behang = vlak, tape = rand, slinger = rand · 4: hekje 28 m (omtrek), gras 49 m² (oppervlakte).

Area or perimeter? Edge or surface?

How you coach: the school's plan 'Oppervlakte or omtrek?'

Today your child learned to choose whether a question is about the edge (rand, perimeter = omtrek) or about the surface (vlak, area = oppervlakte). For a run of 6 m by 4 m, wire netting round it is the perimeter (20 m) and tiles on the floor are the area (24 m²).

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Read the question: is it about the edge all round or about the surface inside?
    AskIs the question about the edge all round or about the surface inside?
  2. Edge all round (fence, frame, ribbon, lights)? Then you work out the omtrek: add up all the sides.
    AskIs it the edge? Which sides do you add up then?
  3. Surface inside (tiles, grass, rug, paint)? Then you work out the oppervlakte: count the squares, rows × squares per row.
    AskIs it the surface? How many rows are there, and how many squares per row?
  4. Check the unit: omtrek in m (or cm), oppervlakte in m² (square metre).

Tip from the teacher

  • Two mistakes: adding up only two sides for the perimeter (6 + 4 = 10 instead of 20) and mixing up m and m². A gesture helps: a circle with your finger is the edge, a flat hand is the surface.
  • For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times · what do I know, what is the question? · write down the sum · work it out · check + unit. Here 'work it out' is the omtrek or the oppervlakte.
