Uw kind leerde vandaag wat je doet als het bovenste cijfer te klein is. Bij 583 − 244 kan 3 − 4 niet: je wisselt 1 tiental in voor 10 eenheden. De 8 wordt 7, de 3 wordt 13, en 13 − 4 = 9. Zo lukt elke aftreksom.

Laat uw kind vertellen. U luistert en vraagt door.
Vraag, maar zeg het antwoord niet voor. Ook niet als u het weet.
Prijs de aanpak, niet alleen het antwoord.

Zet de getallen recht onder elkaar: E onder E, T onder T, H onder H.
VraagStaan de eenheden onder de eenheden? Hoe zie je dat?
Begin rechts, bij de eenheden: bovenste cijfer min onderste cijfer.
VraagBij welke kolom begin je? Wat is bovenste min onderste?
Kan het niet? Wissel in: haal 1 weg bij de buurman links, dan krijg je er 10 bij. Zet de nieuwe cijfers klein erboven.
VraagKan het? Zo niet, bij welke buurman haal je 1 weg? Welke cijfers zet je klein erboven?
Schrijf het antwoord onder de streep en ga naar links: T, H, D.

Hoe ging het?

Tip van de juf

Dé fout van vandaag: omdraaien. Bij 752 − 318 kan 2 − 8 niet en doet een kind '8 − 2': dan komt er 446 uit in plaats van 434. Het is altijd bovenste min onderste; kan het niet, dan wissel je in. Schatten vangt deze fout niet, dus vraag: 'Heb je bovenste min onderste gedaan?'
Laat uw kind de kleine cijfers erboven schrijven en het oude cijfer doorstrepen. Wie dat niet doet, rekent het meestal in het hoofd en draait om. Geld helpt: een tientje wissel je in voor tien munten van 1 euro.
Bij verhaaltjes gebruikt de klas altijd het 5-stappenplan: lees 2 keer · wat weet ik, wat is de vraag? · schrijf de som op · reken uit · controleer + eenheid. Hier is 'reken uit' het cijferend aftrekken.

How you coach: the school's plan 'Cijferend aftrekken'

Today your child learned what to do when the top digit is too small. In 583 − 244, 3 − 4 is not possible: you exchange (inwisselen) 1 ten for 10 ones. The 8 becomes 7, the 3 becomes 13, and 13 − 4 = 9. That way every subtraction sum works (cijferend: digit by digit, under each other).

Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
Praise the method, not just the answer.

Put the numbers exactly under each other: E under E, T under T, H under H (ones, tens, hundreds).
AskAre the ones under the ones? How can you tell?
Start on the right, at the ones: top digit minus bottom digit.
AskAt which column do you start? What is top minus bottom?
Not possible? Exchange (inwisselen): take 1 from the neighbour on the left, then you get 10 extra. Write the new digits small above it.
AskIs it possible? If not, from which neighbour do you take 1? Which digits do you write small above it?
Write the answer under the line and go to the left: T, H, D (tens, hundreds, thousands).
AskWhat do you write under the line? Which column do you go to now?
Check by estimating: round to the nearest hundred. Is your answer close?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

The typical mistake: turning it round. In 752 − 318, 2 − 8 is not possible and a child does '8 − 2': then the result is 446 instead of 434. It is always top minus bottom; if it is not possible, you exchange. Estimating does not catch this mistake, so ask: 'Did you do top minus bottom?'
Let your child write the small digits above and cross out the old digit. A child who does not do this usually works it out in their head and turns it round. Money helps: you exchange a ten-euro note for ten 1-euro coins.
For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times · what do I know, what is the question? · write down the sum · work it out · check + unit. Here 'work it out' is the column subtraction.
