  • Laat uw kind vertellen. U luistert en vraagt door.
  • Vraag, maar zeg het antwoord niet voor. Ook niet als u het weet.
  • Prijs de aanpak, niet alleen het antwoord.
  5. Controleer met schatten: rond af op honderdtallen. Zit je antwoord in de buurt?
VraagWat is je schatting? Zit je antwoord in de buurt?

Samen oefenen aan tafel

  1. Reken onder elkaar uit: 748 โˆ’ 325Vraag: bij welke kolom begin je? Wat is bovenste min onderste?
  2. Reken onder elkaar uit: 8957 โˆ’ 4231. Schat daarna.Vraag: schrijf de letters D H T E boven de hokjes. Wat is je schatting?
  3. Reken onder elkaar uit: 859 โˆ’ 36Vraag: onder welk cijfer van 859 komt de 6 te staan?

4: 452 stoelen.

Column subtraction (cijferend aftrekken): under each other, without exchanging

Year group 6Maths ยท Block 7, week 2 ยท lesson 110 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can work out subtraction sums under each other with the column method."

How you coach: the school's plan 'Cijferend aftrekken'

Today your child learned to work out subtraction sums under each other with the column method (cijferend, digit by digit): the numbers exactly under each other, start at the ones and do a small sum in each column. For 586 โˆ’ 243 that is 6 โˆ’ 3, 8 โˆ’ 4 and 5 โˆ’ 2, together 343. Today the top digit is always big enough.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Put the numbers exactly under each other: E under E, T under T, H under H (ones, tens, hundreds).
AskAre the ones under the ones? How can you tell?
  2. Start on the right, at the ones: top digit minus bottom digit.
AskAt which column do you start? What is top minus bottom?
  3. Not possible? Exchange (inwisselen): take 1 from the neighbour on the left, then you get 10 extra. Write the new digits small above it.
AskIs it possible? If not, from which neighbour do you take 1? Which digits do you write small above it?
  4. Write the answer under the line and go to the left: T, H, D (tens, hundreds, thousands).
AskWhat do you write under the line? Which column do you go to now?
  5. Check by estimating: round to the nearest hundred. Is your answer close?
AskWhat is your estimate? Is your answer close?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Work out under each other: 748 โˆ’ 325Ask: at which column do you start? What is top minus bottom?
  2. Work out under each other: 8957 โˆ’ 4231. Estimate afterwards.Ask: write the letters D H T E above the squares. What is your estimate?
  3. Work out under each other: 859 โˆ’ 36Ask: under which digit of 859 does the 6 go?
  4. From daily life: a hall has 695 seats. 243 seats are taken. How many seats are free?Ask: what is your sum? What is your estimate?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • The typical mistake: not putting the numbers exactly under each other. In 968 โˆ’ 45 the 5 goes under the 8 (ones), not under the 9. A short number moves to the right. Let your child write one digit per square.
  • Always check by estimating: round to the nearest hundred and work out the easy sum. An answer that is far from that cannot be right.
  • For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times ยท what do I know, what is the question? ยท write down the sum ยท work it out ยท check + unit. Here 'work it out' is the column subtraction.
Answers for the parent: 1: 423 ยท 2: 4726 (estimate 4800) ยท 3: 823 ยท 4: 452 seats.
