Grotere keersommen splitsend onder elkaar: 6

  3. Tel de deelantwoorden op.
VraagWelke deelantwoorden tel je op? Wat komt eruit?
  4. Klopt het? Schat: rond het grote getal af. 6 ร— 48 is ongeveer 6 ร— 50 = 300. 6 ร— 326 is ongeveer 6 ร— 300 = 1800.

427 = ...Vraag: hoe splits je 427? Welke drie deelsommen krijg je?
184 = ...Vraag: wat is de waarde van de 1, de 8 en de 4? Schat daarna.
152 = ...Vraag: hoeveel deelantwoorden krijg je? Staan de eenheden recht onder de eenheden?

De 3 is 3 honderdtallen, dus 6 ร— 300.
Antwoorden voor de ouder: 1: 3 ร— 427: 1200 + 60 + 21 = 1281 ยท 2: 5 ร— 184: 500 + 400 + 20 = 920 ยท 3: 7 ร— 152: 700 + 350 + 14 = 1064 ยท 4: 8 ร— 165: 800 + 480 + 40 = 1320 stoelen.

Bigger times sums split up under each other: 6 ร— 326

Year group 6Maths ยท Block 7, week 1 ยท lesson 410 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can work out a times sum like 6 ร— 326 by splitting it up under each other."

How you coach: the school's plan 'Multiplying split up under each other'

Today your child learned to work out a times sum with a three-digit number by splitting it up (splitsend), like 6 ร— 326. Your child splits 326 into 300 + 20 + 6 and works out three part sums: 1800, 120 and 36. Together that is 1956. Each digit keeps what it is worth.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Split the big number into (hundreds,) tens and ones.
AskHow do you split the big number? What are the digits worth?
  2. Multiply each part separately. Put each part answer (deelantwoord) under each other in the squares.
AskWhich part sums do you have? Are the ones straight under the ones?
  3. Add up the part answers.
AskWhich part answers do you add up? What is the result?
  4. Is it right? Estimate: round the big number. 6 ร— 48 is about 6 ร— 50 = 300. 6 ร— 326 is about 6 ร— 300 = 1800.
AskTo what do you round the big number? Is your answer close to your estimate?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

427 = ...Ask: how do you split 427? Which three part sums do you get?
184 = ...Ask: what are the 1, the 8 and the 4 worth? Estimate afterwards.
152 = ...Ask: how many part answers do you get? Are the ones straight under the ones?
  4. From daily life: a cinema has 8 screens with 165 seats in each screen. How many seats is that altogether?Ask: what is your sum? To what do you round the big number?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • The typical mistake: calculating with the digits and not with what they are worth (6 ร— 3, 6 ร— 2 and 6 ร— 6, together 66). The 3 is 3 hundreds, so 6 ร— 300. The estimate shows straight away that 66 is not possible.
  • Put the part answers straight under each other, one digit per square, and count the thousands carefully. Are there three part answers? If one is missing, let your child split the big number again.
  • For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times ยท what do I know, what is the question? ยท write down the sum ยท work it out ยท check + unit. Here 'work it out' is multiplying split up.
Answers for the parent: 1: 3 ร— 427: 1200 + 60 + 21 = 1281 ยท 2: 5 ร— 184: 500 + 400 + 20 = 920 ยท 3: 7 ร— 152: 700 + 350 + 14 = 1064 ยท 4: 8 ร— 165: 800 + 480 + 40 = 1320 seats.
