Grote keersommen splitsend onder elkaar: 6

  3. Tel de deelantwoorden op.
VraagWelke deelantwoorden tel je op? Wat komt eruit?
  4. Klopt het? Schat: rond het grote getal af. 6 ร— 48 is ongeveer 6 ร— 50 = 300. 6 ร— 326 is ongeveer 6 ร— 300 = 1800.

52 = ...Vraag: hoe splits je 52? Welke twee deelsommen krijg je?
85 = ...Vraag: in welke twee delen splits je 85? Waar zet je de deelantwoorden?
63 = ...Vraag: schat eerst. Waarop rond je 63 af?

Antwoorden voor de ouder: 1: 6 ร— 52: 300 + 12 = 312 ยท 2: 7 ร— 85: 560 + 35 = 595 ยท 3: 8 ร— 63: 480 + 24 = 504 ยท 4: 9 ร— 36: 270 + 54 = 324 boeken.

Big times sums split up under each other: 6 ร— 48

Year group 6Maths ยท Block 7, week 1 ยท lesson 310 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can work out a times sum like 6 ร— 48 by splitting it up under each other."

How you coach: the school's plan 'Multiplying split up under each other'

Today your child learned to work out a sum like 6 ร— 48 by splitting it up (splitsend) under each other. Your child splits 48 into 40 + 8, works out each part separately (6 ร— 40 = 240 and 6 ร— 8 = 48) and adds them up: 288. Your child works from left to right, with what the digits are worth: 6 ร— 40, not 6 ร— 4.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Split the big number into (hundreds,) tens and ones.
AskHow do you split the big number? What are the digits worth?
  2. Multiply each part separately. Put each part answer (deelantwoord) under each other in the squares.
AskWhich part sums do you have? Are the ones straight under the ones?
  3. Add up the part answers.
AskWhich part answers do you add up? What is the result?
  4. Is it right? Estimate: round the big number. 6 ร— 48 is about 6 ร— 50 = 300. 6 ร— 326 is about 6 ร— 300 = 1800.
AskTo what do you round the big number? Is your answer close to your estimate?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

52 = ...Ask: how do you split 52? Which two part sums do you get?
85 = ...Ask: into which two parts do you split 85? Where do you put the part answers?
63 = ...Ask: estimate first. To what do you round 63?
  4. From daily life: in the library there are 9 shelves with 36 books on each shelf. How many books is that altogether?Ask: what is your sum? How do you split the big number?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • The typical mistake: forgetting what the digit is worth (doing 6 ร— 4 and 6 ร— 8 instead of 6 ร— 40 and 6 ร— 8). Then the result is 72, and that is far too small: the estimate (6 ร— 50 = 300) shows that straight away.
  • Let your child really write down the part sums (6 ร— 40 = ...) and put the part answers straight under each other: ones under ones. Only writing down the answer does not count: ask 'Show me your part answers.'
  • For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times ยท what do I know, what is the question? ยท write down the sum ยท work it out ยท check + unit. Here 'work it out' is multiplying split up.
Answers for the parent: 1: 6 ร— 52: 300 + 12 = 312 ยท 2: 7 ร— 85: 560 + 35 = 595 ยท 3: 8 ร— 63: 480 + 24 = 504 ยท 4: 9 ร— 36: 270 + 54 = 324 books.
