- Laat uw kind vertellen. U luistert en vraagt door.
- Vraag, maar zeg het antwoord niet voor. Ook niet als u het weet.
- Prijs de aanpak, niet alleen het antwoord.
- Kijk of alle stukken even groot zijn.VraagZijn alle stukken even groot?
Welk deel is gekleurd? En welk deel is niet gekleurd?Vraag: hoeveel stukken zijn het in totaal? Over welke stukken gaat elke vraag?1: gekleurd 2/9, niet gekleurd 7/9
- Een cirkel is in 5 gelijke stukken verdeeld. Er zijn 4 stukken gekleurd. Welk deel is niet gekleurd?Vraag: lees de vraag nog eens. Over welke stukken gaat hij?2: 1/5
- Een strook is in 6 gelijke stukken verdeeld. Er zijn 3 stukken gekleurd. Welk deel is gekleurd?
Coloured, not coloured, eaten and left
Learning goal: "I can work out a part of a whole with a strip or a circle."
How you coach: the school's plan 'Which part of the whole?'
Today your child also learned to find the part that is not coloured, and the part that is 'eaten' (op) or 'left' (over) in a story. With a strip of 8 pieces and 3 coloured, 3/8 is coloured and 5/8 is not. The noemer (denominator, bottom number) stays all the pieces.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Check whether all pieces are the same size.AskAre all pieces the same size? How can you tell?
- Count all the pieces: that is the noemer (denominator), below the line.AskHow many pieces are there altogether? Which number goes below the line?
- Count the pieces the question is about (usually the coloured ones): that is the teller (numerator), above the line.AskWhich pieces is the question about? How many are there?
- Write down the fraction and read it aloud: "3 of the 8 pieces = three eighths".AskWhich fraction do you have? Can you read it aloud?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- A strip is divided into 9 equal pieces. 2 pieces are coloured. Which part is coloured? And which part is not coloured?Ask: how many pieces are there altogether? Which pieces is each question about?1: coloured 2/9, not coloured 7/9
- A circle is divided into 5 equal pieces. 4 pieces are coloured. Which part is not coloured?Ask: read the question again. Which pieces is it about?2: 1/5
- A strip is divided into 6 equal pieces. 3 pieces are coloured. Which part is coloured? What other name do you know for it?Ask: what do you call half of a whole? Does that fit this fraction?3: 3/6 = a half
- From daily life: a cake is cut into 9 equal pieces. 4 pieces have been eaten. Which part of the cake is left?Ask: what is eaten, what is left? How many pieces are there altogether?4: 5/9.
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- Two mistakes: not reading the question properly (writing down the coloured part when the white part is asked) and taking the coloured pieces as the noemer. Let your child underline the word 'not' or 'left' in the question.
- 'Op' (eaten) is gone, 'over' (left) is still on the plate. Put a hand over the pieces that are eaten and count what you can still see.
- For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times ยท what do I know, what is the question? ยท write down the sum ยท work it out ยท check + unit. Here 'work it out' is the plan 'Which part of the whole?'.
