Even ver? Dan zijn ze even groot.VraagWelke strook is het verst gekleurd? Wat zegt dat over de breuken?
Samen oefenen aan tafel
- Welke is groter: 5/6 of 2/3?
- Welke is groter: 2/5 of 3/4? Of zijn ze even groot?Vraag: zijn je stroken even lang? Welke is het verst gekleurd?2: 3/4 is groter
- Welke is groter: 3/9 of 1/3?
Comparing fractions when everything is different
Learning goal: "I can compare difficult fractions with a strip."
How you coach: the school's plan 'Comparing fractions with a strip'
Today your child learned to compare fractions where the teller (numerator) and the noemer (denominator) are both different, for example 2/3 and 3/5. Two strips (stroken) of the same length under each other then show which one is coloured in further. Sometimes they stop at the same place: 1/2 and 2/4 are equal.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Draw a strip (strook). The noemer (denominator, below the line) tells you into how many equal pieces you divide it.AskWhich number is below the line? So into how many equal pieces do you divide the strip?
- The teller (numerator, above the line) tells you how many pieces you colour in.AskWhich number is above the line? How many pieces do you colour in?
- Put the other fraction on a strip that is just as long and just as wide, straight underneath.AskHow long is your second strip compared with the first? Is it straight underneath?
- Look which strip is coloured in furthest: that fraction is bigger. Just as far? Then they are equal.AskWhich strip is coloured in furthest? What does that tell you about the fractions?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- Which is bigger: 5/6 or 2/3? Or are they equal?Ask: where does the coloured part stop on each strip? Hold a ruler straight down.1: 5/6 is bigger
- Which is bigger: 2/5 or 3/4? Or are they equal?Ask: are your strips just as long? Which one is coloured in furthest?2: 3/4 is bigger
- Which is bigger: 3/9 or 1/3? Or are they equal?Ask: does the coloured part stop at the same place?3: equal
- From daily life: two tins of paint of the same size. One is 7/10 full, the other 3/4. Which tin has the most paint in it?Ask: what is your sum? Draw two strips that are just as long.4: the tin that is 3/4 full (3/4 is bigger).
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- Two mistakes: looking at the biggest numbers instead of at the strip, and drawing strips of different lengths (then the longest strip automatically seems 'more'). Let your child draw two strips of the same length straight under each other.
- Does your child know the answer straight away? Then ask 'How do you know?'. If your child can describe the strips in their head, they understand the method.
- For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times ยท what do I know, what is the question? ยท write down the sum ยท work it out ยท check + unit. Here 'work it out' is comparing with two strips.
