VraagWelke tafelsom past erbij?
Finding out whether a number is divisible (deelbaar)
Learning goal: "I can find out whether a number is divisible (deelbaar)."
How you coach: the school's plan 'Finding out about divisibility'
Today your child learned to find out whether a number is deelbaar (divisible): the division works out exactly and nothing is left over. 12 dots in groups of 4 works (12 : 4 = 3, : means 'divided by'); 14 dots does not (3 remainder 2). For 2, 5 and 10 you can see it from the last digit; for 3 and 4 you use the times tables.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Read: by which number do you have to divide?AskBy which number do you have to divide?
- Dividing by 2, 5 or 10? Look at the last digit. By 2: ends in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 ยท by 5: ends in 0 or 5 ยท by 10: ends in 0.AskIs it 2, 5 or 10? Which digit does the number end in?
- Another number, such as 3 or 4? Find the times table sum that fits and divide. Is anything left over?AskWhich times table sum fits? Is anything left over?
- No remainder: the number is deelbaar. A remainder: it is not deelbaar.AskIs there a remainder? So is the number deelbaar or not?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- Is 48 deelbaar by 4?Ask: which times table sum fits? Is anything left over?1: yes, 12
- Which numbers are deelbaar by 5: 35 ยท 42 ยท 50 ยท 58 ยท 65?Ask: which digit do you look at, the first or the last?2: 35 ยท 50 ยท 65
- Is 27 deelbaar by 3? And by 4?Ask: which times table sum comes close? Is anything left over?3: by 3 yes (9 ร 3 = 27), by 4 no (27 : 4 = 6 remainder 3)
- From daily life: a class has 28 children. The teacher wants equal groups, with nobody left over. Can that be done with groups of 3? Of 4? Of 5?Ask: with which group size is someone left over?4: groups of 3 no (28 : 3 = 9 remainder 1), of 4 yes (7 groups), of 5 no (28 : 5 = 5 remainder 3).
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- Even only means deelbaar by 2. 18 is even, but not deelbaar by 4: work it out with the 4 times table (18 : 4 = 4 remainder 2).
- The rule is always about the last digit: 52 starts with a 5, but ends in a 2, so it is not deelbaar by 5. When in doubt, ask: 'Which times table sum goes with it?'
- For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times ยท what do I know, what is the question? ยท write down the sum ยท work it out ยท check + unit. Here 'work it out' is checking whether there is a remainder.
