Uw kind leerde vandaag met de schaallijn op een kaart uitrekenen hoe lang iets in het echt is. De schaallijn van 20 m past 4 keer op een straat: 4 × 20 = 80 m. Past er nog een halve schaallijn bij, dan tel je de helft van de schaallijn erbij.

  • Laat uw kind vertellen. U luistert en vraagt door.
  • Vraag, maar zeg het antwoord niet voor. Ook niet als u het weet.
  • Prijs de aanpak, niet alleen het antwoord.

  2. De schaallijn is 40 m en past 2 en een halve keer op een fietspad. Hoe lang is het pad?Vraag: hoeveel is de halve schaallijn waard?
  3. De schaallijn van 10 m is afgepast op een weg, met een streepje bij elk stuk (ook aan begin en eind): 9 streepjes. Hoe lang is de weg?Teken het. Vraag: tel je de stukken of de streepjes?
  4. Uit het dagelijks leven: een wandelpad op een plattegrond is 5 en een halve schaallijn lang. De schaallijn is 20 m. Hoe lang is het pad?Vraag: wat is de halve schaallijn waard? Thuis een kaart? Pas samen af met een strookje papier.

Hoe ging het?

Tip van de juf

  • Een halve schaallijn vergeten is de veelgemaakte fout: bij 4 en een halve keer 50 m is het 225 m, niet 200 m. Vraag: 'Past er nog een stukje bij?'
  • Tel de stukken, niet de streepjes: er is altijd één streepje meer dan er stukken zijn. En kijk altijd eerst hoeveel de schaallijn waard is: 10 m, 50 m of 200 m?
  • Bij verhaaltjes gebruikt de klas altijd het 5-stappenplan: lees 2 keer · wat weet ik, wat is de vraag? · schrijf de som op · reken uit · controleer + eenheid. Hier is 'schrijf de som op' aantal keer × de schaallijn.
Antwoorden voor de ouder: 1: 3 × 60 = 180 m · 2: 2 × 40 + 20 = 100 m · 3: 8 stukken, dus 8 × 10 = 80 m · 4: 5 × 20 + 10 = 110 m.

How you coach: the school's plan 'Real length with a scale bar'

Today your child learned to use the scale bar (schaallijn) on a map to work out how long something is in real life. The scale bar of 20 m fits 4 times on a street: 4 × 20 = 80 m. If half a scale bar fits as well, you add half of the scale bar.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.

  2. Measure off: how often does the scale bar fit on the length? Start at the beginning and put the pieces exactly against each other.

  4. From daily life: a footpath on a map is 5 and a half scale bars long. The scale bar is 20 m. How long is the path?Ask: what is half the scale bar worth? A map at home? Measure off together with a paper strip.

Tip from the teacher

  • Forgetting half a scale bar is the common mistake: for 4 and a half times 50 m it is 225 m, not 200 m. Ask: 'Does another piece fit?'
  • Count the pieces, not the marks: there is always one mark more than there are pieces. And always look first at what the scale bar is worth: 10 m, 50 m or 200 m?
  • For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times · what do I know, what is the question? · write down the sum · work it out · check + unit. Here 'write down the sum' is number of times × the scale bar.
Answers for the parent: 1: 3 × 60 = 180 m · 2: 2 × 40 + 20 = 100 m · 3: 8 pieces, so 8 × 10 = 80 m · 4: 5 × 20 + 10 = 110 m.
