Tijdmaten omrekenen
- Zoek de afspraak: 1 minuut = 60 seconden ยท 1 uur = 60 minuten ยท 1 dag = 24 uur ยท 1 week = 7 dagen.VraagWelke afspraak hoort erbij?
- 6 minuten = ... secondenVraag: welke afspraak hoort erbij? Ga je van groot naar klein?1: 360 seconden
- 5 dagen = ... uurVraag: hoeveel uur is รฉรฉn dag? Wat doe je dan met de 5?2: 120 uur
- 420 minuten = ... uurVraag: hoe vaak past 60 minuten in 420?
Hoeveel minuten is 2 uur?4: 2 ร 60 = 120, 120 + 20 = 140 minuten.
Converting units of time
Learning goal: "I can convert units of time into each other."
How you coach: the school's plan 'Converting units of time'
Today your child learned to convert units of time with fixed facts: 1 minute = 60 seconds, 1 hour = 60 minutes, 1 day = 24 hours and 1 week = 7 days. From a big unit to a small unit you multiply (ร); from small to big you divide (:).
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Look: from which unit to which unit? For example from hours to minutes.AskFrom which unit to which unit do you have to go?
- Find the fact: 1 minute = 60 seconds ยท 1 hour = 60 minutes ยท 1 day = 24 hours ยท 1 week = 7 days.AskWhich fact goes with it? Can you write it down?
- From a big unit to a small unit: multiply. From small to big: how often does 60 (or 24, or 7) fit into it? Divide.AskAre you going from big to small or the other way round? So multiply or divide?
- Check: if you convert to a smaller unit, the number gets bigger. To a bigger unit, the number gets smaller.AskHas your number got bigger or smaller? Does that fit the unit?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- 6 minutes = ... secondsAsk: which fact goes with it? Are you going from big to small?1: 360 seconds
- 5 days = ... hoursAsk: how many hours is one day? What do you do with the 5 then?2: 120 hours
- 420 minutes = ... hoursAsk: how often does 60 minutes fit into 420? Adding in steps of 60 is allowed.3: 7 hours
- From daily life: a film lasts 2 hours and 20 minutes. How many minutes is that?Ask: convert the hours first. How many minutes is 2 hours?4: 2 ร 60 = 120, 120 + 20 = 140 minutes.
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- The mistake: working as if an hour has 100 minutes. 1 hour and 30 minutes is not 130 but 90 minutes. First convert the hour to 60, then add the minutes.
- Let your child write down the fact first, such as 1 hour = 60 min. Children who skip that more often work with 100 instead of 60. For dividing, adding up is fine too: 60, 120, 180.
- For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times ยท what do I know, what is the question? ยท write down the sum ยท work it out ยท check + unit. Here 'work it out' is converting with the four steps above.
