  2. Wat weet ik, wat is de vraag? Onderstreep de getallen die je nodig hebt.
VraagWat weet je? Wat wordt er gevraagd? Welke getallen heb je echt nodig?
  3. Schrijf de som op: +, โˆ’, ร— of :?
VraagWelke som hoort erbij: +, โˆ’, ร— of :? Hoe weet je dat?
  4. Reken uit.
VraagHoe reken je dit uit? Welke strategie gebruik je?
  5. Controleer: klopt het ongeveer (schatten)? Zet de eenheid erbij.
VraagWat is je schatting? Klopt je antwoord ongeveer? Welke eenheid hoort erbij?

Samen oefenen aan tafel

  2. Een pak rijst weegt 1 kg 250 g. Er wordt 400 g gebruikt. Hoeveel gram rijst is er over?Vraag: staat alles in dezelfde eenheid? Zet het eerst allemaal in grammen.
  3. Er gaan 62 kinderen mee op schoolreis. In elk busje passen 8 kinderen.

Solving a maths problem step by step

Year group 6Maths ยท Block 4, week 4 ยท lesson 110 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can solve a maths problem step by step."

How you coach: the school's 5-step plan (5-stappenplan) 'Solving a maths problem'

Today your child learned to tackle story sums where the sign is not given. In real life a problem never says 'plus' or 'times': you have to find the sum yourself. Sometimes the story also contains something you do not need at all, such as the time the bus leaves.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Read the problem 2 times.
AskHave you read it twice? Tell me in your own words what it is about.
  2. What do I know, what is the question? Underline the numbers you need.
AskWhat do you know? What is being asked? Which numbers do you really need?
  3. Write down the sum: +, โˆ’, ร— or : (divided by)?
AskWhich sum goes with it: +, โˆ’, ร— or :? How do you know?
  4. Work it out.
AskHow do you work this out? Which method do you use?
  5. Check: is it about right (estimate)? Add the unit.
AskWhat is your estimate? Is your answer about right? Which unit goes with it?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Group 6 goes to the museum with 26 children. The bus leaves at 8:45. A ticket costs 7 euros per child. How much do all the tickets cost together?Ask: which numbers do you need, and which not?
  2. A bag of rice weighs 1 kg 250 g. 400 g is used. How many grams of rice are left?Ask: is everything in the same unit? First put it all in grams.
  3. 62 children go on the school trip. 8 children fit in each minibus. How many minibuses are needed?Ask: what do you do with what is left over? Does your answer fit the question?
  4. From daily life: a show starts at 14:20 (twenty past two in the afternoon) and lasts 1 hour and 45 minutes. What time does it end?Ask: do you reach a whole hour first?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • Not all numbers belong in the sum, such as a time or an age. Adding all the numbers together is not a plan: underline only what you need.
  • Check whether the answer fits the question: with 58 children and 4 per car it is 14 remainder 2, but the last 2 children have to come too. Are kilos and grams mixed? First convert everything to grams.
  • This is how your child writes it down at school: question ยท sum ยท answer with unit.
Answers for the parent: 1: 26 ร— 7 = 182 euros (the 8:45 is not needed) ยท 2: 1250 โˆ’ 400 = 850 grams ยท 3: 62 : 8 = 7 remainder 6, so 8 minibuses (: means 'divided by') ยท 4: it ends at 16:05 (five past four in the afternoon).
