Cijferend optellen met onthouden

Uw kind leerde vandaag wat je doet als een kolom op 10 of meer uitkomt. Bij 547 + 176 is 7 + 6 = 13: je schrijft 3 op en zet de 1 klein boven de tientallen. Die 1 is 1 tiental dat niet meer in het hokje van de eenheden paste. Dat heet het onthoudcijfer.

  • Laat uw kind vertellen. U luistert en vraagt door.
  • Vraag, maar zeg het antwoord niet voor. Ook niet als u het weet.
  • Prijs de aanpak, niet alleen het antwoord.
  1. Zet de getallen recht onder elkaar: E onder E, T onder T, H onder H. Eén cijfer per hokje.
    VraagStaan de eenheden onder de eenheden en de tientallen onder de tientallen? Hoe zie je dat?
  2. Begin rechts bij de eenheden. Tel de cijfers op en schrijf het antwoord onder de streep.

  3. Kom je op 10 of meer? Schrijf alleen het laatste cijfer op en zet de 1 klein boven de volgende kolom.

  4. Ga naar links: tientallen, honderdtallen… Tel het kleine cijfer erboven mee.

Samen oefenen aan tafel

  1. 367 + 258 = ...Vraag: wat is je schatting? Waar komt het onthoudcijfer te staan?
  2. 296 + 135 = ...Vraag: hoe vaak moet je onthouden? Zeg bij elke kolom: '... opschrijven, 1 onthouden'.
  3. 479 + 83 = ...Vraag: welk cijfer komt onder de 9? En wat staat er onder de 4?
  4. Uit het dagelijks leven: een kledingwinkel verkocht in april 178 truien en in mei 247. Hoeveel truien zijn dat samen?Vraag: wat is de som? Schat eerst, reken dan cijferend.

Hoe ging het?

Tip van de juf

  • Twee fouten om op te letten: het onthoudcijfer vergeten (613 in plaats van 723) en alles opschrijven (61113). In elk hokje komt maar één cijfer; de 1 zet je klein erboven en die tel je mee.
  • Laat uw kind het onthoudcijfer echt opschrijven, klein boven de volgende kolom. Wie het 'in het hoofd' houdt, vergeet het bij langere sommen. Schatten vangt de grote fouten meteen.
  • Bij verhaaltjes gebruikt de klas altijd het 5-stappenplan: lees 2 keer · wat weet ik, wat is de vraag? · schrijf de som op · reken uit · controleer + eenheid. Hier is 'reken uit' het cijferend optellen met de vijf stappen hierboven.

Column addition with carrying

How you coach: the school's plan 'Column addition', with the onthoudcijfer

Today your child learned what to do when a column adds up to 10 or more. In 547 + 176, 7 + 6 = 13: you write down 3 and put the 1 small above the tens. That 1 is 1 ten that no longer fitted in the ones box. It is called the onthoudcijfer (the carried digit).

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Put the numbers exactly under each other: E under E, T under T, H under H (ones, tens, hundreds). One digit per box.

  2. Start on the right with the ones. Add the digits and write the answer under the line.

  3. Do you get 10 or more? Write down only the last digit and put the 1 small above the next column.

  4. Move to the left: tens, hundreds… Add the small digit above too.

  5. Check: round the numbers and estimate. Is your answer close?

Practise together at the table

  1. 367 + 258 = ...Ask: what is your estimate? Where does the onthoudcijfer go?
  2. 296 + 135 = ...Ask: how many times do you carry? Say at each column: '... write down, 1 carried'.
  3. 479 + 83 = ...Ask: which digit goes under the 9? And what is under the 4?
  4. From daily life: a clothes shop sold 178 jumpers in April and 247 in May. How many jumpers is that altogether?Ask: what is the sum? Estimate first, then do column addition.

Tip from the teacher

  • Two mistakes to watch for: forgetting the onthoudcijfer (613 instead of 723) and writing everything down (61113). Only one digit goes in each box; the 1 goes small above it and you add it too.
  • Let your child really write down the onthoudcijfer, small above the next column. Keeping it 'in your head' goes wrong in longer sums. Estimating catches the big mistakes straight away.
  • For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times · what do I know, what is the question? · write down the sum · work it out · check + unit. Here 'work it out' is column addition with the five steps above.
