Welk deel is wit?Vraag: hoeveel stukken heeft de hele strook? Hoeveel stukken heb je al?1: 1/9
- 4/11 + ... = 1 heleVraag: hoeveel elfden is รฉรฉn hele? Teken zo nodig een strook met 11 stukken.2: 7/11
- Een kind zegt: 'Bij 3/12 ontbreekt 9.' Is dat een goed antwoord? Schrijf het zo op dat het klopt.Vraag: 9 wรกt?
What is still missing to make a whole?
Learning goal: "I can complete a fraction to make one whole."
How you coach: the school's plan 'Completing a fraction to make a whole'
Today your child learned that you can complete a fraction to make one whole. If 3/5 of a strip is blue, then 2/5 is missing, because 3/5 + 2/5 = 5/5 = 1 whole. A whole always has as many pieces as the noemer (denominator) says.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Look at the noemer (denominator, bottom number): into how many equal pieces is the whole divided? One whole has that many pieces (for example 5/5 = 1).AskInto how many equal pieces is the whole divided? So how many pieces does one whole have?
- Look at the teller (numerator, top number): how many pieces do you already have?AskWhich number is above the line? What does that number tell you?
- How many pieces are still missing? Work out: noemer โ teller. The noemer stays the same.AskHow many pieces are still missing? How do you write that as a fraction?
- Check: add the pieces together. Do you get exactly one whole (for example 3/5 + 2/5 = 5/5)?AskAdd the two fractions together. Do you get exactly one whole? How can you tell?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- A strip is divided into 9 equal pieces. 8 pieces are blue. Which part is white?Ask: how many pieces does the whole strip have? How many pieces do you already have?1: 1/9
- 4/11 + ... = 1 wholeAsk: how many elevenths make one whole? If needed, draw a strip with 11 pieces.2: 7/11
- A child says: 'For 3/12, 9 is missing.' Is that a good answer? Write it so that it is right.Ask: 9 what? Which noemer goes with it?3: no, 9 is not a fraction: it is 9/12
- From daily life: an egg box has 12 equal spaces. There is an egg in 8 spaces. Which part of the box is still empty?Ask: how many spaces does the whole box have? How many eggs are already in it?4: 4/12 of the box is empty.
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- The common mistake: adding the noemers too (3/5 + 2/5 = 5/10). Let your child say aloud: 'the noemer stays the same, they are still fifths.'
- The second mistake: only writing the number of pieces (2 instead of 2/5). Then ask: 'A number of what?' The answer is always a fraction, with teller and noemer. Is your child unsure? Drawing a strip and counting the white pieces is always allowed.
- For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times ยท what do I know, what is the question? ยท write down the sum ยท work it out ยท check + unit. Here 'work it out' is completing the fraction with the four steps above.
