Uw kind rekende vandaag precies op de minuut. De sprong naar het volgende hele uur is nu een aanvulsom: van 9:47 sta je op 47 minuten, dus 60 − 47 = 13 minuten tot 10:00. Daarna ga je verder tot de eindtijd (10:13), samen 26 minuten.

  • Laat uw kind vertellen. U luistert en vraagt door.
  • Vraag, maar zeg het antwoord niet voor. Ook niet als u het weet.
  • Prijs de aanpak, niet alleen het antwoord.
  1. Zoek de begintijd en de eindtijd.
    VraagHoe laat begint het, en hoe laat is het afgelopen?
  2. Spring naar het volgende hele uur. (Begin je op een heel uur? Sla deze stap over.)
    VraagOp hoeveel minuten sta je? Wat is dan 60 − dat getal? Zoveel minuten is het tot het volgende hele uur.
  3. Spring verder: eerst de hele uren, dan de minuten.
    VraagHoeveel hele uren passen er nog? En hoeveel minuten blijven er dan over tot de eindtijd?
  4. Tel de sprongen op. 60 minuten = 1 uur.
    VraagHoeveel minuten zijn het samen? Hoeveel is dat in uren en minuten?
  5. Schat: rond af op het kwartier. Klopt het ongeveer?

  1. Van 8:41 tot 9:06. Hoelang is dat?Vraag: wat is 60 − 41? Dat is de eerste sprong.
  2. Van 12:17 tot 13:48. Hoelang is dat?Laat uw kind eerst de sprong naar het hele uur opschrijven: 60 − … = …
  3. Van 14:26 tot 17:09. Hoelang is dat?Vraag: hoeveel hele uren passen er tussen? Kun je die in één sprong doen?
  4. Uit het dagelijks leven: de trein vertrekt om 7:34 en komt om 8:51 aan. Hoelang duurt de reis?Rond begin en eind af op het kwartier. Klopt het antwoord ongeveer?

Hoe ging het?

Tip van de juf

  • De veelgemaakte fout: gewoon aftrekken. 9:07 − 8:49 uitrekenen als 907 − 849 geeft 58, terwijl het 18 minuten is. Vraag: 'Kan dat kloppen? Het is maar een klein stukje op de klok.'
  • Eerst de sprong naar het hele uur: op school schrijven de kinderen bij elke som eerst 60 − … = … op.
  • Lukt 60 − 53 niet? Pak een klok: laat uw kind de lange wijzer van 53 naar 60 draaien en de streepjes tellen. Wie hier vastloopt, mist het aanvullen tot 60.

How long does it take? To the exact minute

Learning goal: "I can work out the time between two clock times to the exact minute."

How you coach: the school's plan 'How long does it take?'

Today your child worked to the exact minute. The jump to the next whole hour is now a 'make it up to 60' sum: at 9:47 you are on 47 minutes, so 60 − 47 = 13 minutes to 10:00. Then you go on to the end time (10:13), 26 minutes altogether.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Find the begintijd (start time) and the eindtijd (end time).
    AskWhat time does it start, and what time does it finish?
  2. Jump to the volgende hele uur (the next whole hour). (Do you start on a whole hour? Skip this step.)
    AskHow many minutes past the hour is it? What is 60 − that number? That is how many minutes it is to the next whole hour.
  3. Jump on: first the hele uren (whole hours), then the minuten (minutes).
    AskHow many whole hours still fit? And how many minutes are then left until the end time?
  4. Add up the jumps. 60 minuten = 1 uur (60 minutes = 1 hour).
    AskHow many minutes is that altogether? How much is that in hours and minutes?
  5. Estimate: round to the kwartier (quarter of an hour). Is it about right?
    AskRound the start and the end to the quarter of an hour. Does your answer fit?

  1. From 8:41 to 9:06. How long is that?Ask: what is 60 − 41? That is the first jump.

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • The common mistake: just subtracting. Working out 9:07 − 8:49 as 907 − 849 gives 58, while it is 18 minutes. Ask: 'Can that be right? It is only a small bit on the clock.'
  • First the jump to the whole hour: at school the children first write down 60 − … = … for every sum.
  • Is 60 − 53 difficult? Get a clock: let your child turn the long hand from 53 to 60 and count the marks. A child who gets stuck here is missing the step of making up to 60.
