How long does it take? Digital times and a timetable
Learning goal: "I can work out the time between two clock times, also on a digital clock and in a timetable."
How you coach: the school's plan 'How long does it take?'
Today your child worked with digital times, also after 12 o'clock (15:35 is 3:35 in the afternoon; in Dutch: 5 over half 4), and read times from a timetable, for example for the school trip. The method stays the same: jumping along the time line.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Find the begintijd (start time) and the eindtijd (end time).AskWhat time does it start, and what time does it finish?
- Jump to the volgende hele uur (the next whole hour). (Do you start on a whole hour? Skip this step.)AskHow many minutes is it from the start time to the next whole hour?
- Jump on: first the hele uren (whole hours), then the minuten (minutes).AskHow many whole hours still fit? And how many minutes are then left until the end time?
- Add up the jumps. 60 minuten = 1 uur (60 minutes = 1 hour).AskHow many minutes is that altogether? How much is that in hours and minutes?
- Estimate: round to the kwartier (quarter of an hour). Is it about right?AskRound the start and the end to the quarter of an hour. Does your answer fit?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- From 13:25 to 14:10. How long is that?Ask: which whole hour do you jump to first? How many minutes is that?1: 13:25 to 14:10: 35 + 10 = 45 minutes
- From 15:55 to 17:20. How long is that?Let your child draw the time line and write down the minutes at each jump.2: 15:55 to 17:20: 5 + 60 + 20 = 85 minutes = 1 hour and 25 minutes
- On the sports day timetable the relay race starts at 9:40 and lunch at 12:05. How long is it from the start of the relay race to lunch?Ask: which two times from the timetable do you need? Which is the start time, which the end time?3: 9:40 to 12:05: 20 + 120 + 5 = 145 minutes = 2 hours and 25 minutes
- From daily life: a film on TV starts at 19:50 and ends at 21:35. How long is the film?Work it out first. Then ask: is it more or less than two hours? Does that fit your estimate?4: 19:50 to 21:35: 10 + 60 + 35 = 105 minutes = 1 hour and 45 minutes.
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- Digital times are not ordinary numbers. Working out 16:10 โ 14:45 as 1610 โ 1445 gives 165, but it is 85 minutes. An hour has 60 minutes, not 100. Let your child say aloud: 'More than 60? Then I turn it into an hour.'
- Does your child not know what 15:25 is on a clock with hands? Take away 12: 15 โ 12 = 3, so 3:25 in the afternoon (in Dutch: 5 voor half 4).
- Changing minutes over 60: 80 minutes = 1 hour and 20 minutes. Ask: 'How many minutes are there in an hour?'
