Samen 10 + 2 = 12 boeketten.

  • Laat uw kind vertellen. U luistert en vraagt door.
  • Vraag, maar zeg het antwoord niet voor. Ook niet als u het weet.
  • Prijs de aanpak, niet alleen het antwoord.
  1. Splits de grote deelsom in twee bekende deelsommen. Vaak is รฉรฉn ervan 10 ร— de deler.

Verhaaltje? Dan gebruikt de klas het 5-stappenplan.
Antwoorden voor de ouder: 1: 30 : 3 + 9 : 3 = 10 + 3 = 13 ยท 2: 60 : 6 + 6 : 6 = 10 + 1 = 11 ยท 3: 40 : 4 + 20 : 4 = 10 + 5 = 15 ยท 4: 50 : 5 + 30 : 5 = 10 + 6 = 16, dus 16 zakken.

Dividing by splitting: what is left over?

Year group 6Maths ยท Block 1, week 2 ยท lesson 210 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can work out division sums like 52 : 4 by splitting them."

How you coach: the school's plan 'Splitting big division sums'

Today your child practised splitting big division sums again (: means 'divided by'). With 84 flowers in bunches of 7, 70 : 7 = 10 from the times table fits. 84 โˆ’ 70 = 14 is left over, and 14 : 7 = 2. Together 10 + 2 = 12 bunches.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Split the big deelsom (division sum) into two bekende deelsommen (division sums you know). Often one of them is 10 ร— the deler (divisor, the number you divide by).
AskWhich part from the times table fits in the division sum? What is left over then?
  2. Work out both sums separately.
AskWhat is the answer to the first division sum? And to the second?
  3. Add up the part answers.
AskWhich two answers do you add up? What do you get?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. 39 : 3 = ...Ask: which part from the 3 times table fits? What is left over?
  2. 66 : 6 = ...Ask: which part from the 6 times table fits? What is left over then, and how do you work that out?
  3. 60 : 4 = ...Ask: estimate first: between which two numbers is the answer?
  4. From daily life: a shop has 80 apples and puts them in bags of 5 apples. How many bags can be filled?Ask: what is your sum? Which two division sums do you make from it?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • The typical mistake: stopping after the first part. With 84 : 7, a child who writes only 70 : 7 = 10 forgets the rest: 10 bunches is only 70 flowers, and there were 84. Ask: 'What is left over?'
  • Is it right? In class the children estimate: 10 ร— 7 = 70 and 20 ร— 7 = 140. 84 is in between, so the answer is between 10 and 20.
  • A second mistake: working out the rest wrongly (84 โˆ’ 70 is 14, not 4 or 24). Does your child choose a different part? Ask whether both division sums are in the times table. A story sum? Then the class uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan).
Answers for the parent: 1: 30 : 3 + 9 : 3 = 10 + 3 = 13 ยท 2: 60 : 6 + 6 : 6 = 10 + 1 = 11 ยท 3: 40 : 4 + 20 : 4 = 10 + 5 = 15 ยท 4: 50 : 5 + 30 : 5 = 10 + 6 = 16, so 16 bags.
