Grote keersommen splitsen: 6

  2. Vermenigvuldig de twee getallen afzonderlijk.
VraagWelke twee keersommen krijg je? Wat is het antwoord van elk?
  3. Tel de deelantwoorden op.
VraagWelke twee antwoorden tel je op? Wat komt eruit?

Samen oefenen aan tafel

24 = ...Vraag: hoe splits je 24? Welke twee keersommen krijg je?
67 = ...Vraag: schat eerst: waarop rond je 67 af? Reken dan in twee stukken.
46 = ...Vraag: schrijf eerst de twee keersommen op. Pas daarna reken je ze uit.

Antwoorden voor de ouder: 1: 7 ร— 20 + 7 ร— 4 = 140 + 28 = 168 ยท 2: 5 ร— 60 + 5 ร— 7 = 300 + 35 = 335 ยท 3: 8 ร— 40 + 8 ร— 6 = 320 + 48 = 368 ยท 4: 4 ร— 30 + 4 ร— 9 = 120 + 36 = 156, dus 156 koekjes.

Splitting big times sums: 6

Year group 6Maths ยท Block 1, week 2 ยท lesson 110 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can work out a sum like 6 ร— 32 by splitting it."

How you coach: the school's plan 'Splitting big times sums'

Today your child learned to work out a times sum that is not in the times tables, by splitting the big number into tens and ones. For 6 tickets of โ‚ฌย 32: 6 ร— 30 = 180 and 6 ร— 2 = 12, together โ‚ฌย 192. So your child does not multiply in columns under each other, but in two parts.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Split the big number into tientallen (tens) and eenheden (ones).
AskHow do you split the big number? How many tens and how many ones are there?
  2. Multiply the two numbers separately.
AskWhich two times sums do you get? What is the answer to each?
  3. Add up the part answers.
AskWhich two answers do you add up? What do you get?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

24 = ...Ask: how do you split 24? Which two times sums do you get?
67 = ...Ask: estimate first: what do you round 67 to? Then work it out in two parts.
46 = ...Ask: first write down the two times sums. Only then work them out.
  4. From daily life: a baker has 4 boxes with 39 biscuits in each box. How many biscuits is that altogether?Ask: what is your sum? Which two times sums do you make from it?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • The typical mistake: treating the tens as ones (splitting 45 into 4 and 5: 3 ร— 4 + 3 ร— 5 = 27). The 4 is 4 tens, so 40. Or writing down only the first part. Ask: 'Which two sums did you make?'
  • Is it right? In class the children check by rounding: 3 ร— 45 is close to 3 ร— 50 = 150, so 27 is far too small.
  • For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times ยท what do I know, what is the question? ยท write down the sum ยท work it out ยท check + unit. Here 'work it out' is splitting the times sum.
Answers for the parent: 1: 7 ร— 20 + 7 ร— 4 = 140 + 28 = 168 ยท 2: 5 ร— 60 + 5 ร— 7 = 300 + 35 = 335 ยท 3: 8 ร— 40 + 8 ร— 6 = 320 + 48 = 368 ยท 4: 4 ร— 30 + 4 ร— 9 = 120 + 36 = 156, so 156 biscuits.
