Vraag: welk woord verandert in een andere tijd?
  4. Terugblik: welke categorie kent uw kind nu beter dan aan het begin van het blok? Zeg de regel en bedenk er twee woorden bij.Vraag: hoe weet je dat het klopt?

Hoe ging het?

Tip van de juf

  • Een mooie afsluiting: laat uw kind de categorie kiezen waar het het meest trots op is en die aan u uitleggen.
  • Lukt een woord echt niet? Doe het één keer voor, laat uw kind het nazeggen en dan zelf opschrijven.

The last lesson: what do you know better now?

Year group 6Spelling · Block 9, week 4 · lesson 510 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories and verbs I still find difficult."

How you coach: category and rule for every word

This was the last lesson of block 9. Together with the class, your child wrote two words on the mini whiteboard, did a dictation with the category card and a sentence, and found the parts of the sentence in that sentence. At the end your child said which category they now know better than at the start of the block.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Listen to the word and say it back.
AskWhich word did you hear? Say it again.
  2. Say the category and the rule. In class, during the dictation, your child points with a finger to the category on the categoriekaart (category card).
AskWhich categories are in it? What is the rule?
  3. Write the word down. A samenstelling (compound word)? Put a star in front of it.
    AskIs it a compound word?
  4. A verb? Say the verb rule: Persoonsvorm in de tegenwoordige tijd: ik-vorm+t, behalve bij ik en als jij of je erachter staat en bij de gebiedende wijs. (Finite verb in the present tense: the ‘I’ form + t, except with ik, when jij or je comes after it, and in the imperative.)
AskWhat is the ik-vorm (the ‘I’ form)? Does jij come after it?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Read each word once; your child repeats it, names the categories and writes it: de cirkel · de oceaan · de ambulance.Ask: which category do you hear? What is the rule?
  2. Verbs with a prefix: you say verwarmen · verkopen · herstellen; your child writes ‘ik …’ and ‘jij …’.Ask: what is the ‘I’ form? Where is a t added?
  3. Read aloud: ‘De oude man loopt naar de bus.’ Your child finds pv (finite verb), wwg (all the verbs) and ond (subject) and does the tijdproef (tense test).Ask: which word changes in another tense?
  4. Looking back: which category does your child know better now than at the start of the block? Say the rule and think of two words for it.Ask: how do you know it is right?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • A nice way to finish: let your child choose the category they are proudest of and explain it to you.
  • Word really not working? Show it once; your child says it back, then writes it alone.
