- Laat uw kind vertellen.
Word classes and parts of the sentence: the abbreviations
Learning goal: "I can correctly use the grammar topics I still find difficult."
How you coach: word class, abbreviation and part of the sentence
In class the teacher threw a ball: whoever caught it said what a word class means, and the others wrote the abbreviation on their mini whiteboard. Then your child found pv (persoonsvorm, finite verb), wwg (werkwoordelijk gezegde, all the verbs in the sentence) and ond (onderwerp, subject) in a sentence.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Say a word class, for example ‘lidwoord’ (article). Your child says the abbreviation.AskWhat is the abbreviation?
- Read the sentence aloud and write the word class under each word.AskWhich word class is this word? How do you know?
- Find the persoonsvorm (finite verb) with the vraagproef (question test: turn it into a question) or the tijdproef (tense test: change the tense).AskWhich word comes first when you turn it into a question?
- Find the verbal predicate (the finite verb and all the other verbs) and the subject (who or what + the finite verb?).AskWhich verbs belong together? Who or what is doing it?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- Ball game: say a word class and throw the ball; your child catches it and says the abbreviation (the ball is optional).Ask: which word class goes with this abbreviation?1: ww werkwoord (verb) · hww hulpwerkwoord (auxiliary verb) · vdw voltooid deelwoord (past participle) · lw lidwoord (article) · znw zelfstandig naamwoord (noun) · bnw bijvoeglijk naamwoord (adjective) · sbnw stoffelijk bijvoeglijk naamwoord (material adjective) · vz voorzetsel (preposition) · vw voegwoord (conjunction) · tw telwoord (number word) · rtw rangtelwoord (ordinal number)
- Read aloud: ‘De vrolijke kinderen hebben een grote hut gebouwd.’ Your child writes the word class under each word and finds pv, wwg and ond.Ask: which verbs belong together?2: De (lw) vrolijke (bnw) kinderen (znw) hebben (hww) een (lw) grote (bnw) hut (znw) gebouwd (vdw); pv hebben; wwg hebben gebouwd; ond de vrolijke kinderen
- From daily life: think of your own sentence and find pv, wwg and ond.Ask: which test do you use?3: own sentence
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- Do you have a ball? Throw it: it keeps your child alert, just like in class.
