- Verleden tijd?
· Kilowoord. Ik schrijf i.
The past tense of strong verbs
Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories and verbs I still find difficult."
How you coach: the past tense of a strong verb
Today your child named the category and the rule for words and put verbs in the past tense (hij neemt – hij nam). These are sterke werkwoorden (strong verbs): the sound changes. Then your child did a dictation with the category card and found the parts of the sentence in a sentence.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- First say the whole verb (for example ‘nemen’) and which person it is (ik, jij, hij …).AskWhat is the whole verb? Which person is it?
- Say the verb rule for the present tense: Persoonsvorm in de tegenwoordige tijd: ik-vorm+t, behalve bij ik en als jij of je erachter staat en bij de gebiedende wijs. (Finite verb in the present tense: the ‘I’ form + t, except with ik, when jij or je comes after it, and in the imperative.)AskWhat is the ik-vorm (the ‘I’ form)? Does it need a t?
- Past tense? Say: Persoonsvorm in de verleden tijd van een sterk werkwoord. Ik denk aan de categoriekaart. (Finite verb in the past tense of a strong verb. I think of the category card.)AskHow does the sound of the verb change?
- Write the word down and say the category and the rule. In class your child puts the category number above it.AskWhich categories are in it?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- Read each word once; your child repeats it, names the categories and writes it: de poncho · de chirurg · de ketchup.Ask: which category do you hear? What is the rule?1: de poncho: Chefwoord. Ik schrijf c h. (I hear sh, I write ch) · de chirurg: Chefwoord. Ik schrijf c h. · Kilowoord. Ik schrijf i. (I hear ee, I write i) · de ketchup: Chefwoord. Ik schrijf c h.
- Past tense: you say ‘hij komt · wij lezen · jij schrijft’; your child writes the past tense and says the verb rule.Ask: does the sound change? How do you know it is a strong verb?2: hij kwam · wij lazen · jij schreef
- Read aloud: ‘De oude klok slaat twaalf uur.’ Your child finds pv (finite verb), wwg (all the verbs) and ond (subject) and does the tijdproef (tense test).Ask: which word changes in another tense?3: pv slaat; wwg slaat; ond de oude klok; tense test: De oude klok sloeg twaalf uur
- From daily life: in three sentences, your child tells you what they did recently, in the past tense, and underlines the finite verbs.Ask: how do you say that in the present tense?4: own sentences
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- A strong verb changes its sound: blijven – bleef. Let your child say the present and the past tense side by side.
- First say the category and the rule, and only then write: the teacher does it the same way.
