  • Laat uw kind vertellen. U luistert en vraagt door.
  • Vraag, maar zeg het antwoord niet voor. Ook niet als u het weet.
  • Prijs de aanpak, niet alleen het antwoord.
  1. Zeg de ik-vorm van het werkwoord. Schrijf hem op.
    VraagWat is de ik-vorm?

Verbs: ik, jij and ‘… jij?’

Year group 6Spelling · Block 9, week 2 · lesson 410 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories and verbs I still find difficult."

How you coach: ik, jij and ‘… jij?’ with the verb

Today your child named the categories and the rules for words. Then they wrote verbs in three forms: ‘ik …’, ‘jij …’ and ‘… jij?’, and did a dictation without the category card. The sentence also had a verb in the gebiedende wijs (imperative, a command).

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Say the ik-vorm (the ‘I’ form) of the verb. Write it down.
    AskWhat is the ‘I’ form?
  2. Does jij come before the verb? Then a t is added. Say the verb rule: Persoonsvorm in de tegenwoordige tijd: ik-vorm+t, behalve bij ik en als jij of je erachter staat en bij de gebiedende wijs. (Finite verb in the present tense: the ‘I’ form + t, except with ik, when jij or je comes after it, and in the imperative.)
    AskWhy is a t added?
  3. Does jij come after the verb (‘… jij?’)? Then no t is added.
AskDoes jij come before or after the verb?
  4. Is it a command (imperative)? Then no t is added either.
AskIs it a question, a statement or a command?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Read each word once; your child repeats it and writes it, without a book: de tournee · het college · de therapie.Ask: which categories do you recognise? What are the rules?
  2. Verbs: you say the whole verb (lopen · helpen · blijven); your child writes ‘ik …’, ‘jij …’ and ‘… jij?’.Ask: what is the ‘I’ form? Where does a t go?
  3. Read aloud; your child writes the sentence down and writes the word class under each word: Papa schrijft: ‘Haal de groene beker!’Ask: which form is the verb in, in what dad says?
  4. From daily life: think of three commands for at home and write them down with an exclamation mark.Ask: is a t added to the verb?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • A command starts with the verb without an extra t: ‘Loop!’, not ‘Loopt!’.
  • Always let your child say the ‘I’ form first: it is the basis of the whole rule.
