Waarom?
Word classes, parts of the sentence and punctuation
Learning goal: "I can correctly use the word classes, sentence parts and punctuation I still find difficult."
How you coach: the word classes and parts of a sentence
Today your child revised grammar: the word classes in a sentence (including the telwoord (number word), the rangtelwoord (ordinal number: first, second) and the voegwoord (conjunction)), capital letters and punctuation, and the three parts of the sentence pv (persoonsvorm, finite verb), wwg (werkwoordelijk gezegde, all the verbs in the sentence) and ond (onderwerp, subject). Your child also did a dictation.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Read the sentence aloud. Say the word class for each word: ww, hww, vdw, lw, znw, bnw, sbnw, vz, vw, tw or rtw.AskWhich word class is this word? How do you know?
- Find the persoonsvorm (finite verb) with the vraagproef (question test: turn it into a question) or the tijdproef (tense test: change the tense).AskWhich word comes first when you turn it into a question?
- Find the verbal predicate (the finite verb and all the other verbs) and the subject (who or what + the finite verb?).AskWhich verbs belong together? Who or what is doing it?
- Check that the capital letters and punctuation are right.AskWhich capital letters and punctuation marks do you see? Why?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- Read aloud: โHet vijfde raam is open, maar het zesde raam is dicht.โ Your child writes the word class under each word and finds the conjunction and the ordinal numbers.Ask: which word is between the two parts?1: Het (lw) vijfde (rtw) raam (znw) is (ww) open (bnw), maar (vw) het (lw) zesde (rtw) raam (znw) is (ww) dicht (bnw)
- Read aloud: โPapa heeft een lange brief geschreven.โ Your child finds pv, wwg and ond and does the tense test.Ask: which verbs belong together? Which word changes?2: pv heeft; wwg heeft geschreven; ond Papa; tense test: Papa had een lange brief geschreven
- Read this sentence aloud; your child writes it down and explains each capital and punctuation mark: Mama vraagt: โKom je eten, lieverd?โAsk: where does what mum says begin? Which marks do you see?3: capitals: Mama and Kom; punctuation: colon, quotation marks, comma, question mark
- From daily life: choose a sentence from a book and write the word class under each word.Ask: which word do you find the most difficult?4: own sentence
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- An ordinal number gives the place in a row (vijfde, zesde: fifth, sixth); a number word says how many (drie, vier).
- Use the school words at home and let your child do the tests out loud.
