Ik schrijf i. · Tremawoord. Puntjes op de e. · de ketchup: Chefwoord. Ik schrijf c h. · 2: eigen woorden; de regel: Woord van het gids-rijtje. Ik schrijf d. · 3: pv werkt; wwg werkt; ond mijn tante; tijdproef: Mijn tante werkte in een ziekenhuis · 4: eigen woorden

The gids list, without the category card

Year group 6Spelling · Block 9, week 2 · lesson 210 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories I still find difficult."

How you coach: the dictation without the category card

Today, with a partner, your child thought of words from the gids-rijtje (the gids list) and said the rule: Woord van het gids-rijtje. Ik schrijf d. (a word from the gids list: I write d) Then your child did a dictation without the category card and found pv (persoonsvorm, finite verb), wwg (werkwoordelijk gezegde, all the verbs in the sentence) and ond (onderwerp, subject) in a sentence.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Listen to the word and say it back.
AskWhich word did you hear? Say it again.
  2. Think of the category and the rule in your head. There is no categoriekaart (category card) and the staalboek (Staal book) is closed.
AskWhich category is this? What is the rule?
  3. Write the word down, without a category number. A samenstelling (compound word) gets a star in front of it.
AskIs it a compound word? Which categories are in it?
  4. A sentence with a verb? Find the finite verb with the vraagproef (question test: turn it into a question) or the tijdproef (tense test: change the tense).
AskWhich word comes first when you turn it into a question?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Read each word once; your child repeats it and writes it, without a book: de thermometer · de vegetariër · de ketchup.Ask: which categories do you recognise? What are the rules?
  2. The gids list from memory: your child names three words from the gids list and says the rule.Ask: how do you know it is right?
  3. Read aloud: ‘Mijn tante werkt in een ziekenhuis.’ Your child finds pv, wwg and ond and does the tense test.Say the sentence as a question: which word comes first?
  4. From daily life: choose three words from a book or from packaging and say the category and the rule for each word.Ask: how do you know it is right?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • Without the category card: your child first says the rule in their head, then writes. Do not say which category it is.
  • When checking, your child says the category and the rule aloud for each word, as in class with a checking pencil.
Answers for the parent: 1: de thermometer: Theewoord. Ik schrijf t h. (I hear t, I write th) · de vegetariër: Kilowoord. Ik schrijf i. (I hear ee, I write i) · Tremawoord. Puntjes op de e.
