  4. Een werkwoord in de voltooide tijd? Zeg: Voltooid deelwoord. Ik denk aan de categoriekaart.
    VraagWelke categorieën zitten erin?

Samen oefenen aan tafel

Categories and verbs without the category card

Year group 6Spelling · Block 9, week 1 · lesson 410 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories and verbs I still find difficult."

How you coach: verbs in two tenses, categories from memory

Today your child said the rule for a categorie (spelling category) and thought of a word for it. Then they wrote verbs in the present and the perfect tense and did a dictation without the category card. Your child also found pv (persoonsvorm, finite verb), wwg (werkwoordelijk gezegde, all the verbs in the sentence) and ond (onderwerp, subject) in a sentence.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Listen to the word and say it back. Think of the category and the rule in your head; there is no card.
AskWhich category is this? What is the rule?
  2. Write the word down, without a category number. A samenstelling (compound word) gets a star in front of it.
    AskIs it a compound word?
  3. A verb in the present tense? Say the verb rule: Persoonsvorm in de tegenwoordige tijd: ik-vorm+t, behalve bij ik en als jij of je erachter staat en bij de gebiedende wijs. (Finite verb in the present tense: the ‘I’ form + t, except with ik, when jij or je comes after it, and in the imperative.)
AskWhat is the ik-vorm (the ‘I’ form)? Does jij come after it?
  4. A verb in the perfect tense? Say: Voltooid deelwoord. Ik denk aan de categoriekaart. (Past participle. I think of the category card.)
    AskWhich categories are in it?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Read each word once; your child repeats it and writes it, without a book: de coupon · de directeur · de saxofoon.Ask: which categories do you recognise? What are the rules?
  2. Verbs: you say nemen · geven · lezen; your child writes ‘jij …’ and ‘jij hebt …’.Ask: what is the ‘I’ form? Which verb rule goes with it?
  3. Read aloud: ‘Mijn zus las een dik boek op de bank.’ Your child finds pv, wwg and ond and does the tijdproef (tense test).Ask: which word changes when you change the tense?
  4. From daily life: choose a category your child still finds difficult, say the rule and think of two words for it.Ask: how do you know it is right?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • Without the category card: your child first says the rule in their head, then writes. Do not say which category it is.
  • With a past participle your child thinks of the categories in it, such as the prefix.
