Word classes, parts of the sentence and punctuation
Learning goal: "I can correctly use the word classes, sentence parts and punctuation I still find difficult."
How you coach: finding the parts of the sentence with the school tests
Today your child revised grammar: the word classes in a sentence, capital letters and punctuation, and the three parts of the sentence pv (persoonsvorm, finite verb), wwg (werkwoordelijk gezegde, all the verbs in the sentence) and ond (onderwerp, subject). The teacher gave the dictation like a test dictation: calmly and with few hints.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Turn the sentence into a question (vraagproef, question test) or into another tense (tijdproef, tense test): the verb that moves to the front or changes is the persoonsvorm (finite verb).AskHow does the sentence sound as a question? Which word changes?
- Find the werkwoordelijk gezegde (verbal predicate): the finite verb and all the other verbs in the sentence.AskWhich verbs are in the sentence?
- Find the onderwerp (subject) with the question: who or what + the finite verb?AskWho or what is doing it? Who or what is it?
- Check that the capital letters and punctuation are right, and write the word class under each word.AskWhich capital letters and punctuation marks do you see? Why?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- Read aloud: โDe kleine poes ligt op de warme bank.โ Your child finds pv, wwg and ond and writes the word class under each word: lw (article), bnw (adjective), znw (noun), ww (verb) or vz (preposition).Say the sentence as a question: which word comes first?1: De (lw) kleine (bnw) poes (znw) ligt (ww) op (vz) de (lw) warme (bnw) bank (znw); pv ligt; wwg ligt; ond de kleine poes
- Read aloud: โMama heeft de deur gesloten.โ Your child finds pv, wwg and ond and does the tense test.Ask: which word changes when you change the tense?2: pv heeft; wwg heeft gesloten; ond Mama; tense test: Mama had de deur gesloten
- Read this sentence aloud; your child writes it down and explains each capital and punctuation mark: Opa vraagt: โWil je mee naar het strand?โAsk: where does grandpa's sentence begin? Which mark ends a question?3: capitals: Opa and Wil (the quote starts with a capital); punctuation: colon, quotation marks, question mark
- From daily life: choose a sentence from a book and find the finite verb and the subject.Ask: which test helps you?4: own sentence
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- Let your child do the question test out loud, with the school words.
- The subject can be more than one word: โde kleine poesโ.
