· Garagewoord. Ik hoor /zj/, maar ik schrijf g. · de yoga: Griekse y-woord. Ik schrijf u. · 3: De (lw) timmerman (znw) heeft (hww) de (lw) deur (znw) geschilderd (vdw) · 4: eigen zin

Categories without the category card: the uw list

Year group 6Spelling · Block 9, week 1 · lesson 210 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories I still find difficult."

How you coach: the dictation without the category card

Today your child revised the categories, but now without the categoriekaart (category card) and with the staalboek (Staal book) closed: the rules have to be in their head. With a partner your child also thought of words from the uw-rijtje (the uw list) and said the rule: Woord van het uw-rijtje. Ik schrijf u. (a word from the uw list: I write u)

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Listen to the word and say it back.
AskWhich word did you hear? Say it again.
  2. Think of the category and the rule in your head. There is no categoriekaart (category card) and the staalboek (Staal book) is closed.
AskWhich category is this? What is the rule?
  3. More than one category in the word? Say them all, from left to right.
    AskWhich categories are in it?
  4. Write the word down, without a category number. A samenstelling (compound word) gets a star in front of it.
    AskIs it a compound word?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Read each word once; your child repeats it and writes it, without a book: de garage · de yoga · de therapie.Ask: which category do you recognise? What is the rule?
  2. The uw list from memory: your child names three words ending in uw and says the rule.Ask: how do you know it is right?
  3. Read aloud: ‘De timmerman heeft de deur geschilderd.’ Your child writes the word class under each word: lw (article), znw (noun), hww (auxiliary) or vdw (past participle).Ask: which is the auxiliary verb, and which the past participle?
  4. From daily life: your child writes a sentence with a word from the uw list.Ask: which category is in that word?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • Without the category card: your child first says the rule in their head, then writes. Do not say which category it is.
  • When checking, your child says the category and the rule aloud for each word, as in class with a checking pencil.
Answers for the parent: 1: de garage: Klankgroepenwoord van de a(a)-lijst. (sound-group word, a(a) list) · Garagewoord. Ik hoor /zj/, maar ik schrijf g.
