Revision: categories, verbs and commands

Year group 6Spelling · Block 8, week 4 · lesson 410 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories and verbs I still find difficult."

How you coach: category, rule and command

Your child practised with a ball: the teacher says a category, whoever catches the ball says the rule. Your child did the dictation without the category card. Your child also put verbs into the gebiedende wijs (imperative): in a command your child writes the ‘I’ form.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Listen to the word and say it back.
AskWhich word did you hear? Say it again.
  2. Think of the category and the rule in your head. There is no categoriekaart (category card) and the staalboek (Staal book) is closed.
AskWhich category is this? What is the rule?
  3. A command? Say: “… is een persoonsvorm in de tegenwoordige tijd: ik-vorm+t, behalve bij ik en als jij of je erachter staat en bij de gebiedende wijs.” (Finite verb in the present tense: the ‘I’ form + t, except with ik, when jij or je comes after it, and in the imperative.)
AskWhich form do you write? Is a t added?
  4. Write it down, without a category number. A samenstelling (compound word) gets a star in front of it.
    AskIs it a compound word?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Ball game: you say a category (routewoord · chefwoord · garagewoord) and throw the ball; your child says the rule and writes a word.Ask: how do you know it fits?
  2. Read each word aloud once; your child says it back and writes it down, without the book: het buiginkje · de rechercheur · de ideeën.Ask: which category? What is the rule?
  3. Make it a command: you say the verb (betalen · begroeten · verhuizen); your child writes it with an exclamation mark.Ask: what is the ik-vorm (the ‘I’ form)? Is a t added?
  4. Read aloud: ‘De schilder heeft de nieuwe deur gelakt.’ Your child writes the word class under each word: lw (article), znw (noun), hww (auxiliary verb), bnw (adjective) or vdw (past participle).Ask: which word is the auxiliary verb?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • ‘Begroet!’ does end in a t: it is already part of the ‘I’ form (ik begroet). No t is added.
Answers for the parent: 1: Routewoord. Ik schrijf otje-ou. · Chefwoord. Ik schrijf c h. · Garagewoord. Ik hoor /zj/, maar ik schrijf g. · own words · 2: het buiginkje: Verkleinwoord met -nkje. Plankwoord. Daar mag niets tussen. Dan je erachter. · de rechercheur: Chefwoord. Ik schrijf c h. · Eur-woord. Ik schrijf eu. · de ideeën: Tremawoord. Puntjes op de e. · 3: Betaal! · Begroet! · Verhuis! (imperative: the ik-vorm, no t is added) · 4: De (lw) schilder (znw) heeft (hww) de (lw) nieuwe (bnw) deur (znw) gelakt (vdw)
